Ontario-born and raised singer-songwriter Shawn Mendes is a global pop superstar, so when he posts something cryptic to social media, you better believe it’s gonna be a trending topic within minutes. True to form, the “If I Can’t Have You” singer went to the top of Twitter’s trending topics Wednesday morning after he first wiped his profile photo and header photo on all his social media profiles, and then posted a 90 second teaser of his new album. Mendes' girlfriend Camila Cabello had this to say regarding the release:
The teaser starts with the camera going through an open window into a loft apartment that’s loaded with artwork, books, empty bottles, newspapers, an electric guitar, open journals full of scribbling, and polaroid pictures stuck on the wall. Not much is in focus until we land on the piano, where we find Shawn. No he’s not sitting at the piano, he’s lying on the floor, playing a series of notes with one hand stretched to the ivories. He begins to sing, and upon that last note, all of the books, bottles and knickknacks lying about his apartment float suspended in air. He jumps through the window to find himself running on a beach cove toward the water. The clip quickly fades to black with the words “Wonder” scribbled across the screen, followed by two dates: October 2nd, December 4th.Okay Shawn, you have our attention. After posting the cryptic question, “WHAT IS #WONDER?” the Shawn-stans of the world banded together to figure out some of the clues hidden within the teaser. The teaser also linked to a website WhatIsWonder.com that features a virtual tour of the loft apartment featured in the clip, where fans can zoom in and out of all the minutiae and tchotchkes scattered about the place. One fan noticed that the books on the shelf had titles that could be songs. Another fan noted that atop the piano sat a setlist full of other song titles, and – woah, there’s a phone number there! The number (305) 745-7485 was no accident as one fan found out when she texted the number. “It’s Shawn. You’re one step closer to Wonder, click the link to find out more,” was the auto-response. The community link asks users to input their contact details so they can be updated when further news drops. One fan speculated that a new single will drop on the October date with the full album on the December date… Fortunately for the Mendes army, we no longer need to speculate. According to a press release, Wonder will be released on December 4 via Island Records/Universal Music Canada. The album’s first single, "Wonder," also the title track from the project, drops this Friday, October 2."I wrote an album. It’s called Wonder. It really feels like a piece of me has been written down on paper and recorded into song. I tried to be as real and as honest as I’ve ever been," says Mendes. "It’s a world and a journey and a dream and an album I’ve been wanting to make for a really long time. I absolutely love it. Thank you for being by my side for so many years. I love you all so much."Mark your calendars![video_embed id='2045014']BEFORE YOU GO: These creepy alien-looking creatures invaded a family camping trip[/video_embed]
