When Jennifer Lopez and Shakira were announced as the performers for this year’s Super Bowl Halftime Show, it was almost a given that the women would deliver one of the sexiest, most dance-centric, hit-packed, high-energy, entertaining halftime shows in football history. On Sunday night, the pair delivered all that and more. Give both these women an Oscar nomination.Making their debut at the Super Bowl in Miami on Sunday night, Lopez and Shakira made history as the first Latina performers to headline the show. Both women performed in both English and Spanish and were joined by a sea of dancers, guest performers, a huge backing band and hundreds of fans on the field.Opening with Shakira and her medley of “She Wolf,” “Empire,” and “Whenever, Wherever,” the Colombian artist sang, played the guitars and drums, danced, and crowd surfed her way into the Halftime show history books.It……was……incredible.The most meme-worthy moment of the show came from Shakira’s tongue wagging, which quickly took over social media. According to SB Nation, Shakira’s action was a zaghrouta, which is an Arabic celebration chant. Shakira appeared to honour her roots in the performance, with the singer’s name meaning ‘grateful’ in Arabic. Lopez took over the second half of the 12-minute show, paying tribute to her New York roots and opening her performance in King Kong-mode on top of the Empire State building. The Grammy-nominee ran through some of her biggest hits, including “Jenny From The Block,” “Ain’t It Funny,” “Get Right,” “Waiting For Tonight” and “On The Floor,” showing off her decades of dance training... and her more recently-acquired skill from her role in Hustlers. Academy Awards, you messed up.Lopez’s stunning crystal body suit was momentarily covered up when she donned a fur jacket that displayed the American flag on the outside and the Puerto Rican flag inside. Lopez threw off the coat as she walked towards her 11-year-old daughter Emme, who joined her mother on stage to perform “Born In The USA.”Although Pitbull was heavily rumored to make a guest appearance in his hometown, Mr. 305 didn’t step onto the field on Sunday night. Instead, Shakira performed “I Like It Like That” with Bad Bunny, while Lopez and J Balvin delivered verses from “Mi Gente.”
Shakira and Lopez received praise from millions of fans and famous admirers, including fellow halftime performers Katy Perry and Lady Gaga.
