“A Jackson doing folk-indie? Not what they expect,” Paris Jackson says in the trailer for her new docu-series entitled Unfiltered on Facebook Watch, which follows Michael Jackson’s only daughter and her singer-songwriter-partner and boyfriend Gabriel Glenn as they launch their band The Soundflowers. And she’s not wrong, as her father was the King of Pop and a legend in Motown, not a guitar-strumming crooner. But as Paris recently explained during an interview with Good Morning America, her style of music is all informed by the trauma and pain she endured after the death of her father in 2009 and thusly growing up under intense media scrutiny.“I originally started writing music for myself, just as, like, just to get things out, to purge,” she told GMA’s Chris Connelly. “It just feels good to... share it. It feels like, not butterflies in your stomach, but in your heart.”[video_embed id='5598980689001']RELATED: Paris Jackson Wants to Use Her Platform To Improve Mental Health[/video_embed]Explaining that she only felt comfortable to truly call herself a musician in recent years, the 22-year-old ingénue says her boho style of music is directly informed from her depression and her attempts of self-harm as a teenager.“I think a part of it was ... a good portion of it was just being that age and ... going through the trials and tribulations of a 15-year-old girl,” she explained. “Trauma is, you know, it's the seed to any kind of unhealthy coping skill that you choose […] I do wear my heart on my sleeve, or so I've been told. I'm very expressive with my face, so people can usually tell when something's wrong.”
Using music as a coping skill, her older brother Prince (who doesn’t go by his official name of Michael Joseph Jackson Jr, even though their younger brother is also named Prince) talked about the first time he heard a song Paris had penned, called “Geronimo,” and the visceral reaction he had to her songwriting skills.

“I remember when my sister first played 'Geronimo' for me,” he recalled. “I can hear and feel all the emotion and pain and hurt that went into that song. I just remember thinking that, you know, this was a song, I think, that other people could ... relate to, but other people needed to hear.”With “Geronimo” now on The Soundflowers EP, Prince related his immense pride at his sister’s successes. “She's making music and putting it out there. I feel that, you know, obviously, with Michael Jackson's daughter coming out, there's a lot of sharks and people out there who wanna just take advantage of that.”

The Jackson family in recent years has been under immense scrutiny after the harrowing documentary Leaving Neverland reignited the child sex abuse allegations that plagued Michael Jackson for nearly 15 years before his death, and continue to be a topic of investigation after his death. Jackson famously endured two legal battles, one in 1993 where his naked body and genitalia were photographed by LA police to corroborate descriptions by the alleged young victim (that case was settled out of court) and again in 2003 when the charges went to trial. Jackson was officially found not guilty.
With the never-ending fascination on the Jackson family, and the enduring legend of their father, Paris says that despite her hardships, she recognizes that life doesn’t get easy, people just get stronger.“You get stronger. Life will get a little harder, but just perspective to look back on and be like, 'I didn't think it was gonna get better, and it did,' you know? So what's the next challenge?”[video_embed id='1994406']BEFORE YOU GO: Try these self-massage techniques to soothe your aches and pains[/video_embed]
