The 2019 BET Hip Hop Awards were on Tuesday night and, naturally, the entire thing was hype. Aside from performances from DaBaby, Chance the Rapper, Rapsody, Rick Ross and T-Pain, we got a whole lot of Lil' Kim. Which is exactly how it should be.The Brooklyn MC paved the way for many female rappers like Nicki Minaj, Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion to make their own mark on today's music scene. She was part of the "Lady Marmalade" ensemble featuring Christina Aguilera, Mya, Pink and Missy Elliott, for which they received a Grammy for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals in 2002. Kim also had several Top 10 hits including "Magic Stick" featuring 50 Cent, "Not Tonight" featuring Da Brat, Left Eye, Missy Elliott and Angie Mar, "Let it Go" with Missy Elliott and Keyshia Cole and "Can't Hold Us Down" with Christina Aguilera. Kim even went on to be the first female rapper to have three consecutive No. 1 singles on Billboard's Rap Songs chart with "No Time," "Not Tonight (Ladies Night Remix)" and "Crush on You," so it only makes sense that she was celebrated Tuesday night like the queen that she is.Despite her 4-foot-11 stature, Kim proves she's still a giant, not only in the music business but also when it comes to her sartorial game. She wore three different outfits for the night, first, a shiny rose-gold number on the green carpet. During her acceptance speech, Kim sported a sexy bodysuit, fur vest, fishnet leggings and patterned boots. She closed out the show wearing a head-to-toe bedazzled catsuit (which reportedly was covered in nearly a million crystals) for a performance that featured a medley of her favourites.
Lil' Kim brought out O.T. Gensis and Musiq Soulchild for the epic performance of her most memorable songs. She opened up with "Lighters Up," joined Junior M.A.F.I.A on "Player's Anthem" as well as busted out her verse from Puff Daddy's "It's All About The Benjamins."It's safe to say Kim lit up the Twitterverse. Kim not only paid homage to Notorious B.I.G. during her medley but also made sure to thank the late rapper during her acceptance speech. "I don't know if ya'll know what it's like to have an angel following you all the time, but that's Biggie," she said. "I'm gonna always love him and I'm gonna always ride for him. I don't play about him. That's just what it is: Brooklyn."The Lil' Kim love comes days before the rap queen is set to release her next album. Mark October 11 on your calendars for the release of 9, her first studio LP in 14 years.
