Lady Gaga is heading back to the top of the charts. The popstar released “Stupid Love” at midnight on February 27, her first non-theatrical piece of new music since 2016’s
Joanne. Gaga did a double premiere on Friday, debuting both the song and video, which shows the singer fighting for, you guessed it, stupid love.Gaga and her band of dancers are divided into groups represented by brightly coloured outfits that can best be described as
Mad Max meets
Power Rangers. Obviously, Gaga is the Pink Power Ranger. Was there ever any doubt? The groups are at odds with one another and meet among the mountains and crystals to fight for dominance, but Gaga arrives in time to bring peace and celebrate with more dancing. The three-minute video is shot entirely on an iPhone 11, BTW. Declaring that ‘Kindness Punks,’ Gaga makes the video inclusive for viewers by performing the chorus of “I want your stupid love” in sign language.
“Stupid Love” has the same high energy and aesthetic as Gaga’s 2011’s “Born This Way,” but marks a new era for the singer. The song is the first pop single for Gaga in four years after Mother Monster spent much of 2017 and 2018 working on
A Star Is Born, winning Best Original Song for “Shallow” at the
2019 Academy Awards and taking home Best Pop/Duo Performance with Bradley Cooper at the Grammy Awards.Speaking with
Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, Gaga said that “Stupid Love,” which acts as the first single from her upcoming sixth studio album dubbed LG6 but without an official title, is designed to get fans dancing and feeling good.“Someone asked me the other day what my goal was with this album and it actually sounds ridiculous when I say it out loud,” said Gaga. “I said, "I would like to put out music that a big chunk of the world will hear, and it will become a part of their daily lives and make them happy every single day."
