Update: It's out!Kanye West had delayed his album Jesus Is King again after it was slated for a September release, West moved the release date to Thursday at midnight, but last night’s deadline came and went without the new record from Yeezy. At this point, it’s unclear why West continues to announce album release dates. The rapper has become notorious for delaying his music, leaving fans waiting for albums that arrive months late, or in some cases not at all.On Thursday, West tweeted the tracklist for Jesus Is King, his first album comprised solely of Christian music. West confirmed that the 12-track album was going to be released at midnight and even made a surprise appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! to promote the new record. Pre-recording his interview for the late-night show on Thursday afternoon, West told the audience that his album was already out.Sharing a clip of his daughter North dancing to his new music, West told Kimmel “I want to say that I love the fact that my daughter wants to go to church. She has such a positive thought association with going to church because it’s outside of the traditional four walls and outside of the pews. Now that God has called me, and I now have given my life to Jesus Christ and I work for God. Now we have Christian innovation in our time.” Adding that he’s in complete service to God, West said “I feel like there’s so few individuals in the position like mine to be able to give their opinion and stand up and say, ‘This is what family is about.’ I feel that God is using me and using the choir and using my family to show off.”
Following his appearance on Kimmel, West updated fans again, revealing that the album was to be delayed while West and his producers put the finishing touches on three of the tracks, “Everything We Need,” “Follow God” and “Water.” West did follow through on the release of his IMAX film Jesus Is King, a visual accompaniment to his new album. With a limited release on Thursday night followed by a wider release in theatres on Friday, reviews for the Jesus Is King film have begun coming in. Unfortunately they aren’t great, with the New York Post calling it “…a 30-minute WTF.” Filming Jesus Is King in Flagstaff, Arizona and working with artist James Turrell, who has many outdoor art pieces throughout the US, West doesn’t appear in the film until the midway point and remains a silhouette for most of his screen time. But at least it came out on time.
West is set to revisit Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Friday night to perform new music from Jesus Is King, so one way or the another, fans will have new music soon.
