Justin Bieber, Jon Batiste, Doja Cat lead the 2022 Grammy Award nominations

The in-person ceremony airs January 31 and will be hosted by Trevor Noah.

Our favourite season—awards, in the words of one Moira Rose—continues, with the 2022 Grammy Awards nominations announced this week. R&B king Jon Batiste is leading the way with 11 nominations in categories that include Record of the Year, R&B Album, and Music Video.

You might know Batiste best for playing musical director on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, but this is your moment to catch up and feast your ears on his newly nominated album, We Are.

Batiste is followed by Justin Bieber, Doja Cat, and H.E.R., all of whom pulled in eight nods each, while Billie Eilish and Olivia Rodrigo rounded out the crowd with seven apiece.

As always, the best new artist category is one to watch, and includes Rodrigo, Saweetie, The Kid Laroi, Eilish's brother Finneas, Baby Keem, and more, making for quite a competitive year.

This is also a big year for Jay-Z since he just surpassed Quincy Jones as the most-Grammy-nominated person in history with 83 lifetime nods. On the other end of the spectrum, Olivia Rodrigo, Selena Gomez and ABBA are all first-time nominees. Marvel even got a shout-out for the WandaVision song "Agatha All Along," which is nominated in the Best Song Written For Visual Media category.

A few things to note: Taylor Swift said she did not submit Fearless (Taylor's Version) for consideration, but did decide to add this year's evermore into the running, which only picked up one nomination. Kacey Musgraves' new album Star-Crossed was not eligible for Best Country Album, though she did earn two noms in other categories.

The nominations were announced virtually by Nate Bargatze, Jon Batiste, BTS, H.E.R., Gayle King, Måneskin, Tayla Parx, Carly Pearce, along with Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. and board of trustees chair Tammy Hurt, and countless others.

This year's nominations are especially notable with the Academy making changes to their voting process after The Weeknd announced he would be boycotting the organization altogether due to its limited scope. Now, the voting committee will include a majority of the Academy instead of the 15 to 30 members who voted previously. Despite the controversy, The Weeknd received three nominations this year, all for collaborative work.

After last year's virtual Grammy ceremony, this year will see the return to in-person festivities, airing on January 31 and hosted by Trevor Noah.
