It’s pretty rare that we see things done the old-fashioned way, and the music industry is no exception. Over the past few years, many of our favourite artists have skewed away from the standard quo to make announcements, drop albums, and hit the stage in totally unique (and sometimes internet-breaking) ways. At this point, we’ve come to expect the unexpected. So if anything, Coldplay continued this trend by announcing a new, double album in (ironically) the most old-fashioned way possible: via type-written letters. When is the last time you received a letter written by mail (...and not a DM, email, or text)? Let alone from a widely celebrated, globally adored band?Let’s not get ahead of ourselves though, here’s how it all went down…Back on November 22 of 1919, an epic solar eclipse was seen by much of the world. Earlier this week, posters featuring a vintage graphic of this eclipse starting popping up around the globe, just in time for the band to post a cryptic five-second teaser to their Instagram feed. The post featured a fittingly vintage black-and-white photo of The Wedding Band & Dance Orchestra and, accompanied by gentle, classical background music, the date of November 22, 1919 splayed across the screen. Coincidence? We think not. Coldplay’s frontman Chris Martin definitely had something to do with it. To confirm our (excited) suspicions, the band sent fans type-written notes directly in the mail on Monday, October 21st which read, “Dear friends, my typing isn’t very good i’m sorry / I and we hope wherever you are you’re ok / for the last 100 years or thereabouts we have been working on a thing called Everyday Life / in the classifieds you might write ‘double album for sale, one very careful owner’ / one half is called ‘sunrise’, the other ‘sunset’ / it comes out 22 november / it is sort of how we feel about things / we send much love to you from hibernation / chris, jonny, guy and Will Champion, esq."The note comically suggests they’ve been in hibernation, and while that may be a slight exaggeration by creative standards, the British rock band hasn’t released a new studio album in nearly four years. In that time, we’ve been graced with a few EPs (Kaleidoscope and Live in Buenos Aires) along with duets with Pharrell and Stormzyy for the Global Citizen EP, but no promise of a full body of new work. So why just announce one new album to eager fans, when you can hit them with a cryptic promise of a double album (seemingly called Everyday Life), instead? Billboard confirmed the new album's release via Atlantic Records, but the band's label did not elaborate any further. Fans eager for more info might notice that the band’s website has been updated to offer a simple graphic of a moon and a sun (and nothing else) to illustrate the “Sunrise, Sunset” theme of the double album. While there is no release date or countdown clock there, we're definitely banking on a November 22 release. Double the music, and double the anticipation for some new Coldplay melodic anthems to make their long-waited debut. We like your style, boys.[video_embed id='1750469']Chris Martin and Gwyneth Paltrow went on a double date with their new partners[/video_embed]
