It may be the holiday season, but it seems like it's still Halloween in Billie Eilish’s brilliant mind. On Thursday, the 17-year-old singer-songwriter made her directorial debut by releasing the music video for her single, “xanny,” and the visuals sure are haunting. The video starts out eerily calm — almost too calm — as Billie sings in front of a white set, sitting on a cream coloured bench in a matching turtleneck sweater (anyone else getting ladies-of-Monterey vibes?) However, things quickly take a wild turn, with an arm reaching out to burn Billie’s face with a lit cigarette as the song drops into its wobbling chorus.Though the most logical response to such an attack would be to scream out in pain (and, if this really were Big Little Lies, threaten a lawsuit), the singer responds instead by participating in a series of on-beat head twitches.
The rest of the video continues in the same pattern; arms reaching out to burn Billie with their cigarettes, as she remains mostly calm, sitting on the bench (and with every burn, it doesn't get any easier to watch.) It comes to an end with the singer rising from the bench, with a face covered in tiny, dark burn marks. Once Billie is out of the frame, the room fills with a thick cloud of *cough* secondhand smoke. At only 17-years-old, Billie Eilish has proven that she’s an artist who isn’t going away any time soon. In this year alone, the singer has piled up a long list of accomplishments — including her recent American Music Awards wins, her six Grammy nominations, and her now directorial debut that fans can’t get enough of. We can’t wait to see what’s next for Billie in 2020 — the sky’s the limit![video_embed id='1844812']RELATED: You need to meet Billie Eilish's brother[/video_embed]
