Ariana Grande is pulling double duty as the executive producer for the new soundtrack to the upcoming Charlie’s Angels
reboot, where she’s also listed as a performer in the track listing. For the film’s lead single “Don’t Call Me Angel,” Grande recruited Miley Cyrus and Lana Del Rey, a trio that will likely net the song a spot at the top of the charts.Grande, Cyrus and Del Rey debuted the video for “Don’t Call Me Angel” at midnight and have already scored the number one trending position on YouTube. Grande teamed up with her frequent collaborator Hannah Lux Davis to direct the video, which features all three women getting their own moments to shine as they make their way around a dark and mysterious mansion.Grande keeps an eye on things from the balcony, Cyrus takes out her frustrations in the boxing ring, and Del Rey records inventory in the home’s weapon room. The women eventually come together to do their own impression of a goth Victoria’s Secret show, with oversized angel wings and all-black outfits. The video ends with the women feasting at the table from Interview with A Vampire
before being told to scram by Elizabeth Banks, who directs the latest Charlie’s Angels
installment and stars as Bosley.
The new song is a stark departure in tone from Destiny’s Child huge hit “Independent Women,” which appeared on the soundtrack to the 2000 Charlie’s Angels
film starring Lucy Liu, Drew Barrymore and Cameron Diaz. While Destiny’s Child had a more positive spin on female empowerment, Grande and co. have updated the song for the #MeToo era, with anger and defiance as the overall tone. Grande takes the lead throughout the song, but its strongest aspect is that all three singers perform in their own distinct voice and style, with Cyrus showing off her incredible and raspy pipes while Del Rey delivers her signature dark and soothing vocals. The new trio may seem surprising at first considering the different styles of the three women, but Cyrus and Grande have a long history of performing together. The former child stars sang a duet during Cyrus’ Happy Hippie sessions on YouTube
and reunited to perform Crowded House’s “Don’t Dream It’s Over” at the Grande’s 2017 One Love Manchester charity concert.
As for Del Rey, she’s the newest member to the group, but has already shown love for Grande when she covered “Break Up With Your Girlfriend” earlier this week at the BBC Live Lounge (Cyrus also covered Grande in the Live Lounge in 2018, performing “No Tears Left To Cry
” with Mark Ronson).
The latest adaptation of Charlie’s Angels
stars Kristen Stewart, Ella Balinska, and Naomi Scott as the tremendous trio, with Banks as their leader Bosley. Sir Patrick Stewart and Djimon Hounsou are also starring in the film as Bosley, with Banks previously stating
that she always felt that Bosley is more of a title than an actual name. Young fans will be excited to see teen heartthrob Noah Centineo also appearing in the film as Balinska’s love interest. The latest installment in the Charlie’s Angels franchise hits theatres on November 15. If you’re feeling a bit nostalgic, all five seasons of the original Charlie’s Angels series are available now on CTV.
