Filter fiasco.

According to Lana Del Rey’s social media accounts, her next album Blue Banisters is scheduled to be released on July 4 (happy Independence Day to our American pals). Del Rey made the announcement on Twitter and Instagram late last night, sharing the news with her fanbase and accompanying it with an image that looks like it’s meant to be album art.

Except… it’s not good. The photo is similar to one Del Rey shared in mid-March with the caption "Rock Candy Sweet. June 1" but this version has the Blue Banisters title printed in curly-cue blue font across the bottom and has undergone a kind of filter treatment reminiscent of pre-Instagram photo apps. See for yourself.

Even Lana’s die-hard defenders aren’t loving this look for her — and they’ve already been through a lot. Over the course of the last year, Del Rey has been in the spotlight over claims that she glamorizes domestic abuse, derides feminism, and attacks women of colour in the music industry. And her critics didn’t even need to provide receipts. Del Rey did it for them.

Last year, the singer namechecked a list of women that included Doja Cat, Ariana Grande, Camila Cabello, Cardi B, Kehlani, Nicki Minaj and Beyoncé, saying that they “have had number ones with songs about being sexy, wearing no clothes, f---ing, cheating etc. Can I please go back to singing about being embodied, feeling beautiful by being in love even if the relationship is not perfect, or dancing for money, or whatever I want — without being crucified or saying that I’m glamorising abuse?” she wrote on Instagram. Cringe.

While a bad album cover doesn’t really compare, let's just call this adding insult to injury. Or free advertising for PicsArt.

It really is a watershed moment in the public’s relationship with Lana as fans struggle to come to terms with what could have gone so completely wrong that it led to this.

The healthiest reaction is probably to realize that all relationships go through phases and this might be either a rough patch or the end.

Hang in there, everyone.
