In her song “Fire Starter,” Demi Lovato sang, “I'm a badass jumping off a moving train,” but now in her music video for “What Other People Say,” that just dropped last night, she stands on an actual moving train. Her collab with Sam Fischer proves to be an emotional roller coaster train ride as they sing about losing sight of who they want to be.

Infused with red, black, and gold hues, the music video starts with Demi sitting alone on a subway car as it races above ground, rain hitting the windows.

Suddenly Sam is there and they unite to sing about their pain, troubled pasts, and regrets together. As the subway car hits top speed, they stand on the roof of it, like they’re conquering their problems together as they sing the chorus, “I used to call my mom every Sunday/So she knew her love wasn’t far away/But now I’m all f***ed up out in L.A./’Cause I care more about what other people say.”

After the music video dropped Tuesday night, it quickly became a trending video on YouTube, and fans on Twitter are praising the anthemic song and video as repeat-worthy and a new fave hit

Sam left a note of gratitude in the comments section, writing, “I'm obsessed with you all. Thank you for taking this song into your arms and allowing us to be a part of your worlds. Making this video is an experience that I'll never forget. I love you all so much. LETS GOOOOOO!!!!! Xx.”

Speaking with NME recently, Demi said, “This song is a reflection on what it’s like to lose who you truly are in an effort to please other people and society. It’s why I wanted to make this song with Sam — ultimately it’s about two humans coming together to connect and find solutions to their problems.”

Sam added that “What Other People Say” is “about the pressures of society and how getting caught up with the wrong things can change you.”

We last saw Demi in January when she performed for US President Joe Biden’s inauguration special Celebrating America. She also recently announced a YouTube series called Dancing With The Devil, where she will open up about her 2018 overdose and her years-long and ongoing mental health work.
