Cardi B is preparing to release the follow-up to her massive 2018 debut album Invasion of Privacy and she’s bringing Megan Thee Stallion along for the ride. Releasing the “Hot Girl Summer” for 2020, the women dropped their sexy single and even sexier music video for “WAP” on Friday, cleaning up the acronym and lyrics to “Wet And Gushy” from the original title of…well, we’ll let you Google that one.Cardi B worked with director Colin Tilley for “WAP,” which opens with the rappers in a sort of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory-type mansion featuring a world of wonder behind every door. Except, instead of candy-candy, it’s eye-candy. The women perform together and separately in a series of fun rooms that include snakes, a shallow pool, a green and purple factory-line, a tiger-print room for Cardi and an all-zebra motif for Megan.
The new video also includes a handful of Cardi and Megan’s famous friends, including makeup mogul and reality star Kylie Jenner, singers Normani and Rosalía, and rappers Sukihana, Mulatto and Rubi Rose. While most of those ladies are used to starring in their own music videos, “WAP” only marks Jenner’s third foray into the music video world after previously appearing in videos for exes Tyga and Travis Scott (though her inclusion here definitely didn't sit well with some fans... yikes).Speaking to Nadeska on Zane Lowe’s Apple Music New Music Daily series on August 7, Cardi praised the up-and-coming rappers featured in her video, saying it was important for her as an established artist to help the next generation.“I feel like people be wanting to put female artists against each other,” Cardi told Nadeska. “It’s the people that be trying to do that s–t. Every single time I feel like there’s a female artist that’s coming up, coming up, coming up and getting their mainstream moment, I always see little, slick comments like, ‘Oh, they taking over your spot. They taking over this, they taking over that.’ And it just makes me feel like, ‘Damn, why it had to be like that?’ Because I actually like shorty’s music a lot.”[video_embed id='2009608']RELATED: Megan Thee cover girl [/video_embed]In the new interview, Cardi talks about not feeling welcome in the music industry when she was first starting out—something she wants to change for new artists. “I feel like there's going to be way more female rappers, because like I said, you cannot control a hot a-- song from people listening to it,” says Cardi. “It is bound to happen. So people got to hop on it, you know what I'm saying? Just understand it. I think it's dope. I think it's pretty cool to me."There's so many different rappers that people can relate to," she continued. "Some female rappers have kids. So, some people that have kids is going to relate to that rapper. Some female rappers go to school, so the school girls are going to relate to that rapper. Every female rapper have a different story. You know what I'm saying? When I hear all these female rappers with different stories, I'd be like, 'Wow, wow, that's crazy. Wow.' Everybody came in the game kind of similar, but kind of different as well. So everybody has a different story and it's dope that different type of girls could relate to a certain somebody, cause not everybody's going to be able to relate to me, to relate to... My old lifestyle or to my new lifestyle.”“WAP” is Cardi’s first video since 2019’s “Press,” which marked the Grammy and BET winner’s directorial debut. It’s also the first video since Megan Thee Stallion’s gun-shot injury last month. Police were called when witnesses in Hollywood Hills saw a group fighting before entering an SUV and driving away and when police caught up to the SUV, they found a concealed weapon that belonged to Canadian rapper Tony Lanez. Megan Thee Stallion was taken to the hospital and treated for gunshot wounds to both feet.Megan updated fans about the incident at the end of July in an Instagram Live video, revealing that she had to undergo surgery to remove the bullets. Calling it the "worst experience of [her] life," Megan did not reveal the shooter’s identity, but did clarify that her silence was not a form of protection for the perpetrator. “It’s not that I was protecting anybody, I just wasn’t ready to speak. That’s not s--t you immediately get on the internet and start talking about.”Two days before the video drop, Megan announced she is Revlon’s new Global Ambassador. Sharing the news on social, she wrote “We definitely have some hot things coming soon for all my hotties and I’m so excited to for all of y’all to live bold with me.” The multi-talented rapper frequently shows off her makeup skills on social media, even doing her own makeup for her Revlon announcement and the new “WAP” video.[video_embed id='2007723']BEFORE YOU GO: Unpacking Beyoncé's 'BLACK IS KING' visual album [/video_embed]
