If Ronnie Spector, a.k.a. the frontwoman of the musical group Ronettes, had her pick of any celebrity out there to play her on the big screen, who would she choose? Well she’d hand-pick Zendaya, of course. And now that dream may soon become a reality.
According to Variety the
Euphoria star and recent Emmy-winner is in talks with the film companies behind an upcoming Ronnie Spector biopic to play the leading role, and it was Spector herself who has led the charge to get the 24-year-old on board. While the casting isn’t 100 per cent confirmed just yet, fans will probably agree it’s hard to imagine turning down a flattering ask like that. The Ronettes were formed in 1961 and included Ronnie Spector, her older sister Estelle Bennett, and their cousin Nedra Talley. Together they pumped out hits like “Be My Baby,” “Baby I Love You,” and “The Best Part of Breakin’ Up.” The group signed with record producer Phil Spector, whom Ronnie married in 1968, but their marriage only lasted six years before they called it quits.Ronnie, who is now 77 years old, has opened up about her life story in the past with her 1990
autobiography Be My Baby, which she wrote with author Vince Waldron. According to the
Variety article, production companies A24 and New Regency have acquired the rights to that novel as well as Spector’s life rights. And they’re hoping that Pulitzer-winning playwright Jackie Sibblies Drury (
Fairview) will write the script. The film will follow Ronnie in the early days of her career as she formed the girl group and signed with Philles Records. It will also trace her marriage to Spector and their divorce, as well as her battle to regain the rights to her music. Ronnie will produce, as will Zendaya once the deal is officially inked.
It was just earlier this September that Zendaya made history by becoming the youngest person to win an Emmy award for lead actress in a drama series. That, coupled with the strong critical reviews she has received for her role on
Euphoria, have led to many more roles for the actor. In addition to potentially starring in this unnamed biopic, she will also be seen in
Dune alongside Timothée Chalamet,
Malcolm & Marie alongside John David Washington (
Tenet), and in the upcoming
Spider-Man sequel. And then there’s also a second season of
Euphoria, which is expected to begin production in early 2021.If that seems a little long for fans to wait, the good news is that HBO is planning a bridge episode to unroll before then. "We might end up doing a little bridge episode … I don't really know how to describe it, but an episode that we can do with a limited amount of people in a safer environment so we have something to live on until we are able to go into Season 2,"
Zendaya explained to Ben Platt in August when he guest-hosted
Jimmy Kimmel Live.Sounds like the good news Zendaya fans everywhere deserve to hear in 2020 for sure.[video_embed id='2045014']BEFORE YOU GO: These creepy alien-looking creatures invaded a family camping trip[/video_embed]
