Prepare to fall in love and have your heart broken once again. After months of speculation and rumours, director Luca Guadagnino has confirmed that
Call Me By Your Name stars Timothée Chalamet and Armie Hammer will reunite for a sequel to the 2017 Oscar-nominated film. Well, that’s just peachy. The film was based on the novel by André Aciman and the release of Aciman’s sequel
Find Me in 2019 fueled speculation that a second film could follow. In an interview this week with Italian newspaper
La Repubblica, Guadagnino confirmed that the second film is in progress and that stars Chalamet and Hammer will reprise their roles as Elio and Oliver.“Of course, it was a great pleasure to work with Timothée Chalamet, Armie Hammer, Michael Stuhlbarg, Esther Garrel and the other actors. Everyone will be in the new movie,” said
Guadagnino via Variety, confirming that Stuhlbarg would reprise his role as Elio’s father and Garrel will return as Elio’s friend and former love interest.Like many films,
Find Me came to a halt due to COVID-19. “Before coronavirus, I made a trip to the United States to meet a screenwriter I love very much, whose name I don’t want to say, to talk about the second part," Guadagnino said. "Unfortunately, we had to put it on hold."[video_embed id='1605107']RELATED: Girl tweets about sitting next to Timothée Chalamet[/video_embed]The stunning 2017 film was brought to life by the captivating and palpable performances of its actors, especially Chalamet, who received an Academy Award, Golden Globe and BAFTA nomination for Best Actor. Hammer was also honored by the Globes, earning his first Best Supporting Actor nod.
In addition to Chalamet’s acting nod,
Call My By Your Name was also nominated for Best Picture and Best Original Song for Sufjan Steven’s mesmerizing “Mystery of Love” at the Academy Awards. Writer James Ivory took home the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for his work on the film. As noted in Guadagnino’s comments this week, the 91-year-old writer will not be involved in the sequel, having said in an interview that he felt the film would lose some integrity by trying to age up Chalamet to match his age in Aciman’s
Find Me, which takes place 10, 15 and 20 years after the events in
Call Me By Your Name. Maybe Ivory needs to watch
The Irishman.“I can’t imagine having to make Timothée Chalamet look 45,” Ivory told
The Film Stage in a November 2018 interview. “I mean, that would be horrendous and so fake looking if that’s what they are going to do! But any case, André Aciman just laughed at the idea to me. He said it was not a good idea. They can’t do a sequel, I think, without him being on board. It’s his characters and his story. But that seems to have died down a bit. I haven’t heard much about it lately.” It seems that Aciman is now on board.
Not only is the news that Chalamet, Hammer and Guadagnino are reuniting for part two encouraging, we’re also excited for another award season spent watching the
sweet friendship between the film’s leads.[video_embed id='1933748']BEFORE YOU GO: Tom Holland and Jake Gyllenhaal do shirtless handstand challenge[/video_embed]
