Tiffany Haddish joins Nicolas Cage's meta movie about Nicolas Cage

When it comes to big screen blockbusters, Tiffany Haddish has proven time and time again that there's no role she can't play. And now, the woman made famous for her comedic chops and larger than life personality both on- and off-screen, is preparing for her next major project: starring opposite Nicolas Cage in the (very meta movie) The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent.

Although the pair might seem like an unlikely duo at first glance, the premise of the movie boasts no shortage of laugh-out-loud potential.

Directed by Tom Gormican (That Awkward Moment), the comedy-action film will see Nic Cage playing, well, himself — actually, two versions of himself: a fictionalized present day version in a sort of 'what if' scenario where he's facing a mountain of financial troubles, and a younger version. With seemingly nothing left to his name, present day Cage (the character) accepts a $1 million offer to attend the birthday of a superfan, played by Pedro Pascal. However — and here's where the 'action' part of the comedy-action comes in — things take a wildly dangerous turn when it's revealed his ‘superfan’ is actually involved in a crime ring. In order to survive the unexpected turn of events, Cage must tap into some of his more iconic on-screen characters.

Haddish, for her part, is set to play an eccentric government agent named Vivian, who enlists Cage as an undercover agent.

The movie will reportedly include nods to a variety of Cage’s past work, including Leaving Las Vegas, Face-Off, and Gone in 60 Seconds. Considering Haddish’s knack for playing outlandish and hilariously outspoken (and off-the-cuff) characters, we can only imagine what Hollywood’s next dynamic duo might have in store for us.

Pending any pandemic-related delays, production on the film is expected to begin this fall. The project enlists Catastrophe's Sharon Horgan alongside Haddish, Cage, and Pedro.

Of course, this isn’t all Haddish has on her plate. A woman of many talents (and an increasingly ambitious project load), the comedian is starring in a number of upcoming films including Paul Schrader's crime drama The Card Counter.

Haddish also made an appearance on Monday's episode of The Ellen Show (weekdays at 3pET on CTV) to help kick off the new season which, prior to its premiere, had inspired no shortage of speculation and media interest. During her appearance, Haddish shed some light on her relationship with Common (which Ellen joked is now "common knowledge") and her decision to spend the bulk of her time at his house “in the hills." Mainly, it would seem, because he has a better pool. Respect, Tiff.
