Don’t tell them what to do and don’t tell them what to say. The A-list trio of Goldie Hawn, Bette Midler and Diane Keaton are reuniting on the big screen for the first time since 1996’s iconic The First Wives Club and fans are waving their Nerf bats in celebration. This time around, the women will appear in the comedy Family Jewels and fans will be lined up for tickets even if the actors don’t wear matching pantsuits.Deadline broke the news on Thursday and revealed a handful of plot details for the family comedy. The women will once again lean on each other for support in the absence of their husbands, but the circumstances are very different. This time around there’s only one husband. Family Jewels stars Hawn, Midler and Keaton as three women who are forced to spend the holidays together with their children and grandchildren after a man they were all once married to dies in a New York City department store shortly before the holidays.Producer Bradley Fisher told Deadline, “The chemistry of Diane, Bette and Goldie is unmatched and irresistible, and I’m thrilled to help reunite them on screen for generations of fans,” adding that filming will begin this year. The script will be written by Peter Hoare, whose latest film, Standing Up, Falling Down starring Billy Crystal and Ben Schwartz, opened to positive reviews this week.“Brad and I always wanted Peter for this project but he was constantly busy,” said producer Alan Nevins. “I, and the public, have waited many years for these three ladies to star in another film together.” We already know that Ariana Grande will be buying a ticket for opening night. In the 1996 film, the three actors play college friends who are brought back together as adults when their fourth friend commits suicide after learning of her husband’s affair. Hawn, Midler and Keaton’s characters have also hit roadblocks in their marriages and decide to form an alliance and support one another as they take down their cheating husbands. The First Wives Club also starred Maggie Smith, Sarah Jessica Parker, Marcia Gay Harden, Stockard Channing, Heather Locklear, JK Simmons, Rob Reiner, Victor Garber, Elizabeth Berkley and included a guest appearance by a newly-divorced Ivanka Trump. The mid 1990s were wild. The movie eventually grossed $181 million at the box office and has continued to be a cult favourite among fans. All three lead actors have continued to enjoy successful careers since starring in The First Wives Club. Bette Midler appeared in her own Las Vegas residency for two years between 2008 and 2010 and took home a Tony for Best Actress in a Musical for her 2017 role in Hello, Dolly! Goldie Hawn has continued her work in comedies, including 2002’s The Banger Sisters opposite Susan Sarandon and 2017’s Snatched, where she played comedian Amy Schumer’s uptight mother. Diane Keaton has enjoyed one of the most consistent careers in Hollywood, becoming a go-to romantic comedy lead into her 60s and 70s when roles for women are typically limited. Since filming The First Wives Club, Keaton has starred in The Other Sister, Something’s Gotta Give, The Family Stone, Morning Glory, Book Club and more.[video_embed id='1902187']Before you go: Firefighters in St. Catharines, Ont. have been told their calendar is too steamy[/video_embed]
