Tis the season – and by that we mean, of course, holiday rom-com reason. It’s a familiar, adored trope: cold weather, feel-good moments, quirky and relatable humour, dysfunctional families, and a generous helping of romance. Familiar, that is, in the traditional sense – over the years, Hollywood has gleefully explored heterosexual relationships under the lens of the holiday season. But what about relationships of the LGBTQ+ variety?

Finally, it seems, the traditional rom-com format is receiving a long-awaited shake-up with an endearing cast of characters and a hilarious plot that promises plenty of heart-warming revelations and character development. Hulu and Sony Pictures have joined forces to gift audiences with Happiest Season, a holiday-themed LGBTQ love story featuring Kristen Stewart and Mackenzie Davis. Our first look at the trailer promises stellar one-liners, adorably awkward moments, and plenty of Dan Levy being his authentic, hilarious self as Stewart’s best friend and confidant.Stewart plays Abby, who is head over heels in love with Davis’s character, Harper. With the holidays just around the corner, things between the couple seem to be reaching their romantic peak, and Harper invites Abby to spend Christmas with her family. Even better, Abby decides to ask Harper (AKA ‘her person’) to marry her at the family’s annual Christmas dinner. There’s only one problem… Harper hasn’t told her family that she’s gay. Rather than being introduced to her girlfriend’s family as, you know, her romantic partner, she’s assigned a much more creative (and hilarious) explanation: Harper’s ‘orphan’ friend. LOL, let the complications and family revelations ensue.[video_embed id='2052313']RELATED: Kristen Stewart dishes on playing Princess Di [/video_embed]Harper’s conservative parents are played by Victor Garber and Mary Steenburgen, in addition to the rest of the notably all-star cast including Dan Levy, Alison Brie, and Aubrey Plaza. The film promises to take viewers though the “range of emotions tied to wanting your family’s acceptance, being true to yourself, and trying not to ruin Christmas.’ Surely, this presents a relatable dilemma for many, as Christmas inevitably marks a time of year in which families are especially invested in the romantic lives of their loved ones. Happiest Season is directed by Clea DuVall, who is still riding off the critically-acclaimed success of The Intervention, and is known for her appearances in Veep, Girl Interrupted, The Handmaids Tale, and more. DuVall and Mary Holland (who also stars in the film) worked together on the script which, according to an Entertainment Weekly interview, explores DuVall’s “own place of truth in order to tell a seasonal story from her own perspective.” Namely, DuVall is paying tribute to the many Christmases and family functions she’s spent labeled as a partner’s “friend” rather than girlfriend.Although this isn’t Stewart’s first queer role, the Charlie’s Angels star shared that being involved in Happiest Season was an ‘exhilarating and freeing’ experience. According to Stewart, while the movie won’t exactly shock people (it’s a rom-com, after all), it provides an opportunity for marginalized people to love each other on the big screen. Earlier this year, etalk spoke with Davis, who also noted that filming Happiest Season was one of the best experiences of her life, with a wonderful group of people.Oh, and Tegan and Sara’s music even makes an appearance in the trailer: For fans eager to get into the holiday spirit, eOne is distributing theatrically in Canada on Nov. 25th, the same day that the film will become available on Hulu for US viewers.[video_embed id='1970446']WATCH: Mackenzie Davis on her mini-series that was cancelled by the pandemic[/video_embed]
