Selena Gomez has given fans plenty of songs throughout her career to help them move past their heartbreak and now she’s gifting viewers with a rom com that will do the same. Gomez has produced the upcoming film
The Broken Hearts Gallery and it has all the love triangles, foul-mouthed supportive friends, dreamy lead actors and New York property porn we can ask for in a romantic comedy.Written and directed by Natalie Krinsky, whose previous credits include
Grey’s Anatomy and
Gossip Girl (we knew the NYC locations were Insta-worthy), the new film stars Geraldine Viswanathan as Lucy, a woman who holds on to both emotional and literal baggage from past relationships. While trying to get over her ex-boyfriend (
Brittany Runs A Marathon and
The Mindy Project’s Utkarsh Ambudkar), Lucy meets Nick, played by
Stranger Things actor Dacre Montgomery. Mistaking his car for her Uber, the two have their meet-cute and eventually become friends. Nick invites Lucy to see the building he’s renovating into a boutique hotel along with his friend and business partner, played by
Narcos and
Broad City actor Arturo Castro. Nick convinces Lucy to begin leaving trinkets from her past relationships on display in the hotel’s lobby, which inspires other New Yorkers to also leave their broken heart tokens, thus creating the Broken Hearts Gallery. When Ambudkar’s character comes back into Lucy’s life, she must choose between him and Nick.
Lucy’s friends Amanda and Nadine are played by Molly Gordon (
Booksmart, Good Boys) and Phillipa Soo (
Hamilton). Suki Waterhouse, Bernadette Peters and Ego Nwodim also appear in the upcoming film.
The Broken Hearts Gallery is not only a directorial debut for Krinsky, but it’s also Viswanathan’s first time as a lead in a comedy feature film. The 25-year-old actor was the breakout star of 2018’s highly underrated
Blockers, where she played the teenage daughter of John Cena and Sarayu Blue. Viswanathan starred as the title character in the 2019 drama
Hala and appeared opposite Hugh Jackman and Allison Janney in the HBO film
Bad Education. She currently co-stars in the comedy series
Miracle Workers with Daniel Radcliffe and Steve Buscemi.
The Broken Hearts Gallery also marks Gomez’s first time as a producer on a feature film. The actor and singer previously produced the documentary
Living Undocumented and was the executive producer on
13 Reasons Why.The new rom com is set to open in theatres on July 17 and no, that’s not a typo.
The Broken Hearts Gallery is scheduled to be one of the first new films to arrive on the big screen when movie theatres reopen in the coming months. AMC
announced last week that they plan on reopening their theatres on July 15 in the US. Regal and Cinemark are expected to follow suit. Some independent movie theatres have begun reopening in Canada with limited seating in BC and Alberta. Theatre giant
Cineplex is expected to announce re-openings in July once the provincial governments gives their okay.[video_embed id='1960784']BEFORE YOU GO: Obama seems to call out Trump's COVID-19 response[/video_embed]
