George Clooney hasn’t taken a lead starring role in a movie since 2016 (although he did have a supporting role in the Catch-22 series last year) so you might have thought he was busy being a happy husband and father and just enjoying life. Nope, he spent his days pre-COVID-shutdown secretly filming, starring in, and directing a huge post-apocalyptic science fiction movie for Netflix about being the last man alive on a destroyed earth. Sure, that all sounds thrilling, and we’re excited to have George back, but did you see his beard?!The trailer for The Midnight Sky (which will premiere on Netflix just in time for Christmas) just dropped and we are shook. Clooney plays Augustine, a lonely scientist in the Arctic, furiously racing to contact and stop Sully (Felicity Jones) and her fellow astronauts from returning home to Earth, where a mysterious global devastation has occurred.
Sure, this may be sci-fi, but it also looks like the not-too-distant future (what with the global pandemic, the climate crisis, civil unrest on the streets, and global politics all reaching a boiling point), a coincidence George himself had to acknowledge.“It’s science fiction,” he told Vanity Fair, "which unfortunately is less fictional as we move through the days.”“The sickness of hate and the elements that come from that, battles and wars—that has been percolating for quite some time,” he continued. “There’s the sadness [in the film] of what man is capable of doing to man and how easily it can just be taken away.”“I wanted it to be about redemption in a way. I wanted there to be some hopefulness in a fairly bleak story about the end of mankind.”Watching the trailer, not only is the viewer struck by the eerie similarities to the dumpster-fire that is 2020, but also by George’s appearance. He is rocking a serious case of Grandpa-beard. “I don’t look so good,” he added to VF. “I’m not even 60 yet, but the character is 70. Unfortunately, I’m looking closer to that. I’ve always looked a little older, but now I really look like I am. I’d say I look like my father, but my father looks better than me.”“My wife was very happy when I finished shooting this,” he added with a laugh. Amal Clooney, thank you for your service.Even though the trailer just dropped this morning, fans and celebs alike are posting about how badly they’ve been jonesing for some Clooney on their screens. Like actress Reese Witherspoon, who tweeted Tuesday morning “Just the other day, I thought.. ‘I miss George Clooney’ and then the universe answered!” George also sits in the director’s chair for The Midnight Sky (not to be confused with new Miley Cyrus song of the same name!), which is an adaptation of Lily Brooks-Dalton’s acclaimed novel Good Morning, Midnight. The film co-stars David Oyelowo, Kyle Chandler, Demián Bichir and Tiffany Boone.[video_embed id='-1']Before you go: George Clooney knows he was a terrible Batman[/video_embed]
