If there is one thing that has uplifted our spirits and restored our faith in humanity during these unprecedented times of the COVID-19 global pandemic, it’s the amount of people willing to donate their time, energy, and money to help out those less fortunate. COVID-19 doesn’t discriminate and can affect any family or community at any time, but we’re still learning so much about this virus that more research and relief is required in order to beat it and save our lives. A lot of celebrities lately have been stepping up to the challenge to raise the funds needed for the cause, like Lady Gaga’s star-studded One World: Together At Home “concert,” and now there’s a new show on the horizon loaded with bopping tunes and familiar faces, all in the name of COVID relief. The cast of the hit 1996 movie-musical That Thing You Do!, which was written and directed by Tom Hanks, is reuniting for a one-night-only, at-home watch party of the classic film, and the entire band will be there, including Liv Tyler!Band ringleader Ethan Embry (who was every '90s gal’s teen crush . . . yeah we admitted it) tweeted the news on Monday, announcing, “This Friday April 17th, 7pmEST/4pmPST the One’ders are reuniting FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME for a community watch party of That Thing You Do! We’re gonna have the WHOLE band AND @LivTyler + a few other surprise guests live stream a commentary to raise funds for @MusiCares!!” Set your timers, and make sure you bookmark the link to the community watch party, because the entire cast who played the Oneders in TTYD over 20 years ago will be part of the event, including Tom Everett Scott, Johnathon Schaech, Ethan Embry and Steve Zahn. Liv Tyler, who was the main romantic interest in the film (and frankly, in every '90s film) will also participate. Although Ethan announced that other special guests will be involved, it’s not yet clear if actor, writer and director Tom Hanks will be among them. Tom Hanks very recently recovered from COVID-19 along with wife Rita Wilson, so we’re sure his involvement would be most welcome. The event will also reportedly pay tribute to the late musician and composer Adam Schlesinger, who penned the famous hit from which the film takes its name. Schlesinger, who also co-founded the pop rock band Fountains of Wayne, passed away recently from complications related to COVID-19. He was nominated for an Academy Award and a Golden Globe for his TTYD! song that was styled as a '60s pop hit. Tom Hanks recently paid tribute to Schlesinger, saying that “there would be no Playtone without Adam Schlesinger . . . he was a One-der . . . Terribly sad today.” The community watch event will benefit the organization MusiCares which describes itself as providing preventative, recovery, and emergency assistance to safeguard the well-being of people in the music industry. Good. All those singer-songwriters we’ve been binging on Spotify? Yeah, we’re gonna need those people healthy and alive. Can’t wait to tune in![video_embed id='1932779']RELATED: Hollywood mourns death of musician Adam Schlesinger at 52[/video_embed]
