The new film Pieces of a Woman, starring Shia LaBeouf and Vanessa Kirby, debuted its first trailer on Tuesday and it will surely tug on your heartstrings. The film is about a Boston couple who were on the verge of parenthood until their lives changed drastically when a home birth ends in an unutterable tragedy.Kirby portrays a young woman named Martha, who must navigate her grief over the loss of her baby while working through her unruly relationships with her husband Sean (LaBeouf) and her overbearing mother, played by Ellen Burstyn. The year following the loss is filled with grief for Martha as her mother urges her to go to trial against her midwife (Molly Parker) and the film follows the legal fallout.Once Martha goes to court, the trailer gives a quick glimpse of Succession star Sarah Snook addressing making a statement and heartbreaking snippets of moments as the couple publicly processes their grief. "How is Martha?" one of Sean's coworkers asks. "Martha's fine, she's always fine," Sean replies. When Martha is packing up the baby's room, Sean leans in the doorway and asks, "Why you trying to disappear my kid?" and Martha shoots back at him that they "don't have a kid."
Pieces of a Woman is the English-language debut of director Kornél Mundruczó and was written by his wife Kata Wéber and executive produced by Martin Scorsese. The film wowed audiences when it played earlier this year at the Venice International Film Festival and TIFF. The drama will hit select theatres on December 30 and launch on Netflix on January 7, 2021.Kirby recently told Variety that the film is "so much bigger than any of us." She said, in preparing for the role, she spoke with women that had stillbirths and multiple miscarriages, noting it's "still a subject that's really hard to talk about." The actress also revealed that the best moments of her "working life was doing that birth" and said that it's "hard to articulate." She called LaBeouf "a real theatre animal" and said that everyone on set understood what it would require to shoot that scene.[video_embed id='2076479']BEFORE YOU GO: Baby has an adorable reaction to family's new puppy[/video_embed]
