Resident Evil has long since established itself as an epic movie franchise. The horror series was born out of a Japanese video game with a cult following, and has since inspired 6 movies (almost as many as
Fast and Furious, which is saying something). And since 2020 seems to be the year of reboots, where would we be without a fresh take on the iconic survival tale? Fortunately, we won’t have to find out, because a brand new reboot is officially in the works.
Deadline reports that Constantin Film has signed on for a new
Resident Evil adaptation that will offer viewers "an official origin story adaptation with faithful ties to Capcom’s classic survival horror games." This time around, the story will be set in 1998 in Raccoon City, brought to life by an incredible cast including Kaya Scodelario (
Maze Runner and
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tale) as Claire Redfield, Hannah John-Kamen (
Ant-Man) as Jill Valentine, and Robbie Amell (
Upload) as Chris Redfield. For anyone who needs a refresher (which is probably most of us after six movies, tbh) the original 1996
Resident Evil game follows Chris and Jill as they work to navigate their way out of a mansion during a zombie outbreak. Chris’ sister, Claire Redfield, came into the picture during
Resident Evil 2 which takes place two months after the events of the first game.Rounding out the already impressive cast, we have Avan Jogia (
Zombieland: Double Tap) as Leon S. Kennedy (who was featured alongside Claire in
Resident Evil 2), Tom Hopper (
The Umbrella Academy) as Albert Wesker, and Neal McDonough (
Yellowstone) as William Birkin.[video_embed id='2050169']WATCH: Chris Pratt under fire for insensitive voting post[/video_embed]Speaking with Deadline, writer and director Johannes Roberts explained her vision for the latest instalment. “With this movie, I really wanted to go back to the original first two games and re-create the terrifying visceral experience I had when I first played them whilst at the same time telling a grounded human story about a small dying American town that feels both relatable and relevant to today’s audiences.”Robert Kulzer, the resident producer on the
Resident Evil movies (see what we did there?) will produce the project on behalf of Constantin, with the help of James Harris and Hartley Gorenstein.
And if you think the movie will simply revisit familiar tropes, think again. According to Kulzer, this sequel will “explore the secrets hidden in the walls of the Spenser Mansion and Raccoon City.”The movie is planned for release in 2021, so we have to wait awhile to discover those aforementioned secrets but, if the other films are any indication, it should be worth the wait. In the meantime, Netflix is also
reportedly developing a live-action TV show based on the franchise.[video_embed id='-1']Can you see the face in the window of this old spooky house?[/video_embed]
