And you thought your living quarters were feeling cramped this year. Imagine trying to accommodate a super-sized canine in a tiny New York City apartment. That’s the premise behind the Clifford series of books from Scholastic — stories centered on a big red dog that have been read and re-read for generations. Clifford the iconic Big Red Dog has been a publishing phenomenon since the early 1960s (so much so that Scholastic uses his instantly recognizable image as their company mascot) but now Clifford is heading to the big screen for a live-action adaptation. An early sneak peek of the upcoming movie dropped today. For so many pet owners, it’s our animals that have gotten us through some of the darkest days of 2020 with their enthusiasm for each new day and their complete obliviousness to things like pandemics, or the economy, or U.S. presidential elections. All they know is that a lot of us have been spending more time at home, and that works for them. This first look at Clifford The Big Red Dog recognizes that fact, giving thanks for the presence of our beloved pets both this year and always.
Now. Fans know this is a movie about a big red dog. And they know what the cartoon looked like. But while some saw the new live-action Clifford as more puppy to love, others were a little, well, disturbed by his bigness and redness. Of course, Clifford still has some dedicated fans. Hey, it's a giant puppy! The little red puppy he leaves her with seems pretty average at first, but when she wakes to find a ten-foot hound in her tiny apartment she is, to say the least, shocked. British comedian Jack Whitehall (Bad Education, Travels With My Father) plays Emily’s “fun but impulsive” uncle and, taking advantage of Emily’s mother being out of town, the two head out to make trouble and find a bit of adventure with Clifford in tow. The film also stars Kenan Thompson, Rosie Perez and Horatio Sanz.Clifford The Big Red Dog is due out in theatres on November 5, 2021.
