The big winner at this year’s Razzie Awards should come as a surprise to no one, including the film’s strays. Sorry, stars. Cats swept the annual award show that honours the best of the worst in feature films, winning six of its eight nominated categories at the 2020 Golden Raspberry Awards. The awards show was scheduled to take place on Saturday, March 14, but was one of the many events around the world cancelled due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Rather than let big name actors and directors get away unscathed in 2020, the show went online on Monday and announced the winners in a YouTube video titled ‘The Lock-Down Edition.’Cats won most of the major categories this year, taking home Worst Picture, Worst Director for Tom Hooper, Worst Screenplay, and Worst Screen Combo for Any Two Half-Feline/Half-Human Hairballs. Rebel Wilson took home Worst Supporting Actress and James Corden, who does not regret his role in Cats because it was a pleasure to make the film, took home Worst Supporting Actor. Me-ow.Wilson was also nominated for Worst Actress for her role in The Hustle and prima ballerina Francesca Hayward also earned a nomination for her role in Cats, which to be fair, marks only her second feature film role. Dame Judi Dench has definitely acted before and was still nominated for her role as Old Deuteronomy, which goes to show that even the greats don’t always land on all fours. In this case, we blame the terrifying CGI more than the great Dench. The celebrated British actor helped make lemonade out of lemons this week when she revisited her work as a cat along with friend and actor Gyles Brandreth to recite The Owl and the Pussy-Cat to encourage people to wash their hands for at least 20 seconds. Cats was a huge disappointment at the 2019 box office, making just $38 million globally, a far cry from its $100 million budget. The first trailer for the film instantly went viral, with viewers shocked and confused at the troubling use of cat hair on the cast that included Idris Elba, Jennifer Hudson, Jason Derulo and Taylor Swift. Well, the hair, and also the female cats having breasts. Why?!The Razzies also awarded John Travolta for a second time this year. Travolta took home Worst Actor for his roles in The Fanatic and Trading Paint. Hilary Duff was awarded Worst Actress for her turn as Sharon Tate in The Haunting of Sharon Tate and Rambo: Last Blood was awarded Worst Remake, Rip-Off or Sequel. The Sylvester Stallone film also won Worst Reckless Regard for Human Life and Public Property for its bloody fight scenes.Past Razzie winner Eddie Murphy was redeemed this year after previously winning Worst Actor, Worst Supporting Actor and Worst Supporting Actress in 2008 for his role(s) in Norbit. Murphy was awarded the Razzie Redeemer Award for his work in Dolemite Is His Name. The category was a tight race and gave hope to other nominees, reminding them that Keanu Reeves (John Wick and Toy Story 4), Adam Sandler (Uncut Gems), Jennifer Lopez (Hustlers) and Will Smith (Aladdin) have all made stinkers as well.[video_embed id='1923260']RELATED: How Hollywood is responding to COVID-19[/video_embed]
