“Gucci needs new blood.”

And with that line uttered by Lady Gaga in the new trailer for House of Gucci, we immediately know that this story isn’t going to have a fairytale ending. Or beginning. Or middle. Despite being set in a world that oozes wealth, glamour, and sophistication, House of Gucci, like so many other dark and/or tragic stories from the fashion world, is about the ways that pressure and greed can corrupt… and eventually erupt into violence.

The dark history of the fashion world includes more than just Gucci scandal. There was the murder of Gianni Versace, the suicides of Isabella Blow and Alexander McQueen, the anti-Semitic rantings of John Galliano, and Coco Chanel’s collaboration with Nazis during the second World War. To, you know, name just a few.

But, of course, back to the Gucci saga. Gaga plays outsider Patrizia Gucci (nee Reggiani) who marries into the design empire when she weds Adam Driver’s Maurizio Gucci, one of three Gucci family scions (Jeremy Irons and Jared Leto play the other two, Rodolfo and Paolo). As the family grapples over which way to take the company, Patrizia decides that her own vision should prevail — and that it’s her husband who stands in her way.

Bluntly, she gives the hitmen she’s hired to deal with Maurizio some succinct advice: “Don’t. Miss.” The story might remind fashion world aficionados of the violent gunshot death of another Italian designer, Gianni Versace. That case was dramatized on television in The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story and starred Édgar Ramírez, Darren Criss, Ricky Martin and Penélope Cruz (who was nothing short of magnificent as Donatella).

House of Gucci’s cast is just as impressive. It includes Jared Leto as Paolo, Jeremy Irons as Rodolfo, and Al Pacino as Aldo (aka Big Papa Gucci himself).

The new clip and posters remind sartorial obsessives everywhere that there’s often a darkness lurking behind their favourite label — and that an unquenchable thirst for power isn’t confined to the world of tech bros and their space exploration projects. Sometimes it spills over into a handbag or a high heel.

House of Gucci hits theatres on November 24. Accept no knock-offs.
