Break out your best bend and snap and put up those Wreath Witherspoons a few months early because Mindy Kaling is giving all Elle Woods fans a reason to celebrate with news that she’s officially signed up to write the new Legally Blonde movie. Just picture Elle yelling “She did it!” in an imaginary Mindy-themed commencement speech to gauge just how exciting this news has to be for the former Office writer, who has openly gushed about her love of the character and Reese Witherspoon in the past.Deadline broke the news on May 18, confirming that Kaling and Dan Goor (Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Parks and Recreation) have been hired to bring Elle Woods back to audiences almost two decades after the sequel, Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde, hit theatres in 2003. It’s some major movement for a movie that 's been in the works for a while now; Witherspoon previously confirmed in 2018 that a new Legally Blonde 3 movie was happening with a sunny pool video on her Instagram.According to the publication, original Legally Blonde writers Kirsten Smith and Karen McCullah started a script two years ago, but now that Goor and Kaling are on board they’re going to come up with something completely fresh. Naturally, Witherspoon will return as the beloved character, and the actress will also produce under her company Hello Sunshine. Mind you it’s anyone’s guess when this will all go down—you’re talking about some of the busiest people in the biz.[video_embed id='1939142']RELATED: The star of Mindy Kaling's new show reveals how she got the role of a lifetime[/video_embed]Need proof? Witherspoon is coming off a Golden Globe-nominated performance in The Morning Show, her second-season run of Big Little Lies and the first-season of her hot take on Little Fires Everywhere, but she’s also agreed to bless audiences with two new rom-coms in the very near future. And for her part, Kaling has been making her big-screen mark with films like Late Night and an upcoming wedding comedy starring Priyanka Chopra (with Goor also on board), not to mention her critically-acclaimed Netflix series Never Have I Ever and the TV version of Four Weddings and a Funeral.
Kaling was a fan of Witherspoon’s from afar before the pair struck up a real-life friendship. In 2017 Witherspoon guest starred on Kaling’s TV series The Mindy Project, and Kaling appeared in a handful of episodes of The Morning Show. Naturally, fans aren’t just in their feelings over the actresses teaming up again, they’re hoping Kaling writes herself a small part in whatever updated drama Elle Woods will potentially find herself in this time around. Witherspoon was in her early 20s when the OG Legally Blonde was released in 2001, and the cast included a bunch of other notable stars like Victor Garber, Luke Wilson, Selma Blair, Matthew Davis, Jennifer Coolidge and Ali Larter. The story about a girl following her ex to Harvard Law and discovering a whole new version of herself is widely considered to still hold up today—it even became a musical in 2007 and earned seven Tony Award nominations.Last month Witherspoon confirmed the movie was still very much in the works when she joined Jennifer Lopez in an Instagram Live chat. After Lopez admitted her family had watched the original film together, she gushed about how much they loved it and that they were looking forward to the sequels. “Well, no, there’s a 2 but I’m thinking we might be working on a 3,” Witherspoon teased at the time.It doesn’t take a legal team to deduce that since both films collectively nabbed close to $267 million US in the worldwide box office, giving fans another installment just makes sense.[video_embed id='-1']BEFORE YOU GO: Dog's guilty smile explains who made the mess on the bed[/video_embed]
