“This movie is about, for these two young women, the first time they stood up for themselves and declared who they were and they got to go to their prom,” Murphy tells Entertainment Weekly. “I wish this movie existed when I was that age. Because I wasn't allowed to go to my prom. Every person in the world has longed to have that experience go well and to be told, 'You look great. You can love who you love, and all the adults around you support you,' so I just think it's a universal idea.”The movie is based on the Tony-nominated Broadway play of the same name, which Murphy saw about a month before securing the rights to recreate it for a bigger audience. The movie was actually just days away from completing filming when the pandemic hit, and it took a team of scientists and strict protocols to wrap it up afterwards, reports EW. The whole point was to get it in front of audiences by Christmas, and they just barely made it in time for the now official, December 11 release.“It's hard right now for so many artists, especially live entertainment,” DeBose, who had a role in Hamilton, also tells EW. “The fact that we still have this outlet to bring art to everyone, especially because we're bringing musicals into people's homes, I'm relishing it because art is so important. Art heals; it gives us the ability to talk about really important things. It means everything to realize that there's still an avenue to receive new music and musical theatre. It keeps our hope for Broadway alive.”Speaking of keeping Broadway hopes alive, Murphy is also hoping to use the film’s release as a way to raise funds for the actors who have been affected by live theatre shutting down for the foreseeable future as a result of coronavirus. He also revealed to the publication that he plans on holding events and special screenings to raise money for the Actors Fund, an organization that helps struggling actors through emergency financial assistance. “One of the things that we're trying to say with the movie,” he reveals, “is not only do we celebrate you, but we also see you and we feel your pain, and we're going to be there to help you.”It’s like this movie really is his Christmas gift to everyone.[video_embed id='2030335']BEFORE YOU GO: Cat attempts daily hilarious attack on mail carrier[/video_embed]EVERYONE DESERVES A CHANCE TO CELEBRATE.
