If you loved Jennifer Garner’s top-notch turn as Eve Saks in
Dallas Buyers Club, it turns out you may have Matthew McConaughey to thank for it. Garner is opening up about the time she almost quit the Best Picture-nominated 2013 film, and how her co-star was the one who convinced her to stay.In an interview with
Tell Me More With Kelly Corrigan, Garner revealed that eight years ago she had just given birth to her third child, son Samuel, when her agent sent her the script for the film and told her it was time to go back to work. She agreed, but then being on set and away from her brood was harder than she’d imagined—especially since she was still breastfeeding.“There was never a 10-minute break,” she revealed. “My boobs were freaking out. It was bedtime, and we were doing some scene that was supposed to be light, and I started crying and I was like, ‘I have to quit. I have to go home and be with my kids. I just can’t do this anymore.’” Breastfeeding + all those hormones + long production days? That definitely sounds like the perfect storm for someone in Jen’s situation to want to pack it all in. Luckily, McConaughey realized something was up.“Sweet Matthew McConaughey pulled me aside and said, ‘What is going on with you?’” Garner continued, adding that after confiding in him he told the crew to take a break so that she could pump. “And from then on, whenever I needed to, I would give him a high sign and I would go take care of it," she said. “He said, ‘You can do both. You’ve got it. You can do it.’”Cue the swooning from fans everywhere. “How much do I love that guy? I know, a lot,” Jen added. Of course, Garner was probably a part of the McConaughey appreciation club long before they shot the flick, having worked with him previously in 2009’s
Ghosts of Girlfriends Past. But as any new mom can attest, having people in your corner during that trying part of your life is always a welcome relief. McConaughey probably recognized that, having young kids at the time too.Garner shares three children, Violet, 14, Seraphina, 11, and Samuel, who is now 8, with ex Ben Affleck. McConaughey, meanwhile, shares three kids with wife Camila Alves—Levi, 12, Vida, 10, and Livingston, 7. Earlier this year during a
HISTORYTalks: Leadership and Legacy event in New York, McConaughey opened up about fatherhood, revealing that he would be down to have more children. “I’d like to have eight more kids,” he told the crowd,
as per USA Today. “My wife’s not on the same page.”When
Dallas Buyers Club dropped, it was the beginning of a new career path for McConaughey, following his decision to shed his romantic comedy persona. The gamble paid off: he won the Oscar that year for best performance in a leading role. The 50-year-old opened up about the experience in his new memoir,
Greenlights, revealing that he turned down a $14.5 million gig in 2010 to make another romcom like
How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days or
Failure to Launch. “I declined the offer,”
he wrote. “If I couldn’t do what I wanted, I wasn’t going to do what I didn’t, no matter the price.”[video_embed id='2064209']Before you go: Matthew McConaughey reveals the hilarious story behind his iconic line, ‘Alright, alright, alright’[/video_embed]
