In a statement to Deadline, Larraín, who notably directed Natalie Portman in Jackie, explained the root of his desire to make this film. “We all grew up, at least I did in my generation, reading and understanding what a fairy tale is. Usually, the prince comes and finds the princess, invites her to become his wife and eventually she becomes queen. That is the fairy tale. When someone decides not to be the queen, and says, I’d rather go and be myself, it’s a big big decision, a fairy tale upside down. I’ve always been very surprised by that and thought it must have been very hard to do. That is the heart of the movie." Some users were seemingly disappointed that Emma Watson was not selected for the role, others argued that they simply can’t see the resemblance between Stewart and Diana, and a few users who felt the role should have gone to a British actress. Kristen Stewart playing Princess Diana in a PABLO FREAKIN’ LARRAÍN FILM? Apocalypse cancelled!

Addressing his decision to position Stewart at the helm of his latest project, Pablo noted that “Kristen is one of the great actors around today. To do this well, you need something very important in film, which is mystery. Kristen can be many things, and she can be very mysterious and very fragile an ultimately very strong as well, which is what we need." Over the years, Stewart has demonstrated quite a range in her acting abilities — switching from drama-filled, critically acclaimed projects like Certain Women to light-hearted, female-led motion pictures like Charlie’s Angels. Larraín refers to her as a “force of nature.” The title of the film, Spencer, is based on the family name Diana (better known as the People’s Princess) had before marrying Charles in 1981. The film is expected to be a hot buy at the upcoming Virtual Cannes Market. What do you think?
