Issa Rae and Jordan Peele — name a better movie-making duo. We’ll wait. On Wednesday, Deadline revealed that Rae and Peele have officially signed on to produce Sinkhole, based on Leyna Krow’s short story of the same name, for Universal Pictures.
Notably, Universal beat out over 10 other studio bidders to win the screen rights to the popular supernatural tale, which follows a young family who move into their ‘dream home’ — which just so happens to have a gaping sinkhole in the backyard (which was surely deemed as a ‘charming quirk’ by the realtor). After moving in, it’s soon discovered the sinkhole seems to mysteriously fix broken and destroyed things, which then begs the question… can it fix a person? Sinkhole explores themes of gender, identity, and of course, mystery and drama, and is set on the street in Spokane, Washington where the writer, Krow, actually lives.
Rae, who just earned an impressive 8 Emmy nominations with HBO’s Insecure, will produce the film under Issa Rae Productions alongside Peele’s Monkeypaw and Universal. Although it's yet to be confirmed, it also sounds like Rae could potentially star in the film, as well (fingers crossed).

Jordan launches #ChangeHollywood initiative[/video_embed]As far as success predictions go, this seems like a winning combination — after all, Get Out and Us were both massive, genre-defining box office hits with viewers and critics alike. Add Rae in the mix, who on top of being at the top of her game right now, has worked with Universal on The Photograph and Little… well, that’s a movie we definitely don’t want to miss. And it seems fans agree — including A Black Lady Sketch Show creator Robin Thede.
I AM IN A SINKHOLE OF JOY ALREADY JUST HEARING THIS NEWS!

Deadline notes that Krow, who will also be executive producing, wanted to explore the idea of perfection in her story, the societal and cultural pressures placed on women, and the notion of a 'broken' woman. Sinkhole is set to be a genre film (which is seemingly Peele’s area of expertise), with elements of sci-fi and psychological horror.
Peele also recently produced and co-wrote the screenplay for the new Candyman movie, directed by Nia DaCosta, which drummed up major audience interest a few months ago when the teaser trailer was released. Despite release delays due to the coronavirus pandemic, the film is finally set to hit theatres in September. Last month, we finally got our hands on the official trailer and well, let’s just say, it looks creepy as hell (in the best way possible).
