Rev your engine in solidarity, the Fast and Furious franchise has announced that it will be ending its race to wild box office success with just two more films before it kills the engine for good (sort of—do billion-dollar ideas ever really die?). Fans, who were slated to be treated to a ninth Fast and Furious movie this year (COVID ruins everything) will hopefully see F9 next spring. After that, there will be two more high-octane films, directed by franchise regular Justin Lin, before the long-running saga calls it quits. With the exception of those spin-off movies, of course.Lin entered the world of the Fast and Furious with 2006’s Tokyo Drift, and then went onto direct four more movies--Fast & Furious (2009), Fast Five (2011), Fast & Furious 6 (2013) and F9. The 10th and 11th films will bring his directorial total up to seven for a photo finish that’s sure to be a crash-and-explosion extravaganza. Other filmmakers that have helmed Fast movies include John Singleton, James Wan, Rob Cohen, David Leitch, and F. Gary Gray. The final two films will conclude the storyline centred on Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) and his badass street-racing fam but Universal, the studio behind the project, has already made its move into the world of spin-off movies with 2019’s Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw (streaming now on Crave)—and it has plans for more, including a female-led story. We assume Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham are already working in their driving loafers.[video_embed id='2055743']MORE MOVIE NEWS: DiCaprio, Streep and many more join J-Law for ‘Don’t Look Up’ [/video_embed]As Variety points out, Fast and Furious has long been a major money-maker for Universal. The seventh film pulled in over a billion box office dollars thanks to its widespread international appeal and diverse cast of stars including Diesel, Johnson, and Statham as well as Paul Walker, Michelle Rodriguez, Ludacris, Tyrese Gibson, Jordana Brewster and Lucas Black. F9 will add John Cena and Hobbs & Shaw's Helen Mirren (yes, really) to its cast and feature cameos from Cardi B and Ozuna. At this point, it’s impossible to say how soon production will be able to fire up the engines on the last two movies but for now, get your Fast fix by rewatching Hobbs & Shaw on Crave now and checking out the trailer for the next film, F9, below.
