The first trailer for filmmaker Ron Howard’s upcoming movie, Hillbilly Elegy, features Amy Adams like we’ve never seen her — as well as an unrecognizable Glenn Close. The two Academy Award-nominated actors team up in Howard’s new drama to play a warring mother-daughter duo battling it out in the midst of poverty, addiction, and a seemingly unending string of family crises. Taking it all in is Adams’ character’s young son, the real-life protagonist of the story based on writer J.D. Vance’s autobiographical tale, Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis.Vance’s book documents his life growing up with his reliable and sturdy grandmother while being subjected to his mother’s often devastating battle with an addiction to drugs and the inconstancy that comes with it. Despite escaping the social and economic hardships of his upbringing for a place at Yale’s law school, J.D. can’t escape the emotional ties and family obligations that bind him to the place he came from. Which, of course, is where things get difficult. With his grandmother gone, J.D. (played by Gabriel Basso) must navigate the family drama and dynamics alone.[video_embed id='2026867']RELATED: Julianne Moore joins Amy Adams in 'Dear Evan Hansen'[/video_embed]Like much of Howard’s work, the movie (scheduled to be released in theatres next month and airing on Netflix on November 24) is already receiving a generous amount of awards season speculation. It definitely doesn’t lack the kind of uplifting story of family hardship and drama that the Academy is typically drawn to. Best of all, it features two glamorous actors dressed down to near-unidentifiableness and playing characters far removed from their sparkly Hollywood personas.Check out the first trailer for Hillbilly Elegy below (and adjust your Oscars bingo card accordingly).
