Carol Danvers is ba-ack. Or at least she will be now that Marvel has finally gone ahead and confirmed the anticipated Captain Marvel sequel… as if the studio wouldn’t actually follow up on what turned out to be a $1.1 billion worldwide box-office smash. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed on January 22 that Brie Larson is returning to the iconic role, revealing that the studio is hiring writer Meghan McDonnell (WandaVision) to put pen to paper on a script that moves the story from the 1990s to the present day.McDonnell takes over from Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, who co-wrote and co-directed the first instalment. And while there are no directors for this sequel on board just yet, the publication reports that Marvel hopes to “find a female filmmaker.” If they mean that, they probably won’t have to look far.[video_embed id='1867168']RELATED: These are the most anticipated films of 2020[/video_embed]Captain Marvel was the Marvel franchise’s first female-centric movie when it debuted last year, although it came out two years following Gal Gadot’s DC-universe Wonder Woman. That flick made $821 million worldwide in 2017, proving that the world is quite eager for female superheroes after all.
The story of Captain Marvel followed a woman named Carol Danvers, a regular old human who got caught up in a war between two alien races, survived an explosion, and was subsequently injected with all kinds of cool powers. The role was a pretty big one for Larson, who played it again in Avengers: Endgame. It’s safe to say the actress has been on a big-screen tear ever since winning an Oscar for the 2015 film Room (which was released the same year she played Amy Schumer’s sister in Trainwreck, BTW). She was also at the Toronto International Film Festival last year for her role in Just Mercy alongside Jamie Foxx and Michael B. Jordon. Of course with sky-rocketing international popularity you’re always going to get haters, and those who aren’t fans of Larson in the role have been coming out in droves. Some viewers have started a petition to recast the character, hoping for a woman of colour or someone who they believe better represents the LGBTQ community (the character’s identity is never clarified in the movie). Then there are those who are just pumped to see their gal back onscreen, because a female superhero is still representation. Either way, this movie is coming, so let the big screen wars continue.[video_embed id='-1']Before you go: This toddler has a surprise hiding in the drawer[/video_embed]
