Fans were thrown into a bit of a frenzy over the weekend when they thought that maybe all of their
holiday wishes were coming true and another
Die Hard movie was finally on the way. Unfortunately for them, though, it seems like John McClane was just messing with them. Again. On October 18 the internet snapped to attention when a series of Twitter accounts started sharing a clip teasing that something big was coming during the NFL game between the Los Angeles Rams and the San Francisco 49ers. Bruce Willis’ daughter, Rumer Willis, NFL sideline reporter (and former
Dancing With the Stars co-host) Erin Andrews, and comedy group The Lonely Island all shared a cryptic clip with the hashtags #DieHardIsBack and #Ad. “As one story ends… a new one begins,” promises the clip, as Willis’ McClane character turns around and takes his jacket off.
Before fans could
die of excitement or finish screaming “Yippee ki yay,” it turns out the promised promo wasn’t an ad for the
rumoured McClane movie, but an ad for a “Die Hard” branded car battery. And here you thought big ad releases and football only went hand-in-hand during the Super Bowl.In the two-minute clip McClane is on a dangerous new mission: to get a fresh battery for his dead car. And instead of simply purchasing one, he goes through the window of an auto parts store, wriggles up through a vent, and (naturally) dodges bullets as he tries to get his car in gear. “Well you wanted the quiet life John. Dead battery. Empty streets,” the ad begins as McClane’s car keeps turning over in the middle of a dark night, setting up the scenes to come.
Of course it wouldn’t be a true
Die Hard offering if there wasn’t plenty of fiery action and some fun Easter eggs for fans. The video definitely features lots of both. At one point McClane’s limo driver from the original movie, Argyle (De'voreaux White), makes a cameo to drive McClane back to his car (and to steal the famous “Yippee ki yay” line). There’s also a moment where McClane smashes someone’s head in with the Die Hard battery, and one where he throws a grenade at an enemy while wishing him, “Happy trails.” The whole thing ends with Argyle and McClane driving off with a fresh new battery installed in the car, with a giant blaze of glory behind them. Some may be disappointed that this wasn’t the anticipated sixth
Die Hard movie, but on the plus side at least the ad shows that Willis is still open to reclaiming the part. That may leave some singing “Ode to Joy” for now, as fans everywhere sit back and wait to see when, if, and how Disney might reverse its decision to put the latest
Die Hard film on hold.[video_embed id='2051569']Before you go: Whoopi Goldberg confirms ‘Sister Act 3’ is in the works[/video_embed]
