In front of Will and Kate, too.

If your eyes are burning from the brightness of celebs congregated in auditoriums to accept awards over the past few weeks, you’re not alone. After the Golden Globes, Critics' Choice Awards, SAGs and Grammys, February 2nd brought us the BAFTAs—a.k.a. the final awards show in this stretch of celebrations leading up to the Oscars. British and North American personalities hit up the Royal Albert Hall in London to fete all of the best movies of 2019, but despite everyone wearing their fifth-best outfits, it kind of felt like everyone was over it. Or maybe they were just trying to get a second wind before the Super Bowl? Whatever it was, the BAFTAs were a mood…

The royals step out

Unlike all of the other awards shows in the past five weeks, the BAFTAs were special because they got two media darlings to come out and celebrate with them: Will and Kate. The royal pair lit up the red carpet earlier in the night (no interviews, natch), and then there were plenty of opportunities for the camera to pan to them throughout the show. Obviously they were extremely careful not to respond or react to any of the political (or #Megxit) jokes coming from the stage, but it’s safe to say they’ve had a bit of media training for these kinds of things, no?Sadly, those who kept watching to see whether the Duke of Cambridge would make any mention of the recent family drama were disappointed when he took the stage later on in the evening, and remained mum on the Queen and co. Although he did call out the ongoing problem with diversity, so there’s that.

Brad throws shade at the monarchy

Not that anyone was over-analyzing it, but Kate and Will didn’t even flinch when Brad Pitt won the BAFTA for best supporting actor and gave his own royal zinger. He wasn’t there in person to accept the award (he had a family commitment), but he had Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood co-star Margot Robbie accept on his behalf.“He says, ‘Hey Britain, heard you just became single, welcome to the club. Wishing you the best with the divorce settlement, blah blah blah,’” Robbie began before sincerely thanking a list of people on Pitt’s behalf. But then she read the kicker:“He says, ‘I’m gonna name this Harry because he is, ‘Really excited to bring this back to the States with him.’” Ouch. Cue the camera to Will and Kate, who smiled and applauded like it was the best joke they’d heard all night. [video_embed id='1887130']Related: Brad Pitt is not above wearing a name tag[/video_embed]

Rebel Wilson slays

Pitt wasn’t the only person to call attention to the royal drama—Rebel Wilson did a stuttering bit involving the name of the hall while presenting the best director award, and Kate was caught with a very tight smile. The rest of the crowd was there for it though; from Wilson’s vagina jokes to Cats puns, she got more than a few chuckles. She also held up the mask and declared it was a “great way to stop yourself from getting Corona Virus.” Then, in what might have been the best moment of the night, she gave a very appropriate shout-out to all of the male directors nominated: “I don’t think I could do what they do. Honestly… I just don’t have the balls.”

Graham Norton makes everyone uncomfortable

In his daily gig on The Graham Norton Show, the talk show host is pretty used to making celebs feel comfortable and getting them to open up. In his gig hosting the BAFTA Awards, he seemed to take a different approach. He wasn’t Ricky Gervais-level mean, but he was certainly hard-hitting with bits about white men running the film world and plenty of cracks at the length of The Irishman. For their part, the celebs in the audience looked a bit sour on the whole thing. Maybe Scar-Jo was too nervous heading into the Oscars next weekend to crack a smile, or Robert DeNiro is just over the punches at this point. Whatever it was, he didn’t seem to get too many laughs… or even genuine smiles.

Laura Dern gives the sweetest speech

Margot Robbie was nominated for best supporting actress twice (for Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood and Bombshell), but it was still our gal Laura Dern who made everyone bow to her with her win for Marriage Story. And she was just as humble as you’d expect when she held up that mask trophy, recalling a story about how her mother, Diane Ladd, won the same trophy in 1976 for Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore.“My mom told me that it’s what friends give you to congratulate you because you get to have the job you love,” she said, before thanking everyone in her personal and professional life for letting her do what she loves. Simple, sweet, and poignant. It’s hard to believe that’s the same actress who pulls off Renata Klein.

Gollum gets an award

Did you know that the guy who played Gollum was also in Planet of the Apes, King Kong and The Last Jedi? You’d never recognize Andy Serkis’ face because he’s always wearing those motion capture suits and playing larger-than-life characters, but BAFTA certainly recognized “the most agile actor in London” at their show. Not only did they have Sir Ian McKellen come out and say some kind words about his Lord of the Rings co-star, but they gifted him with the Contribution to Cinema Award. “Thank you for allowing me to gallivant around the world in grey spandex suits,” he thanked everyone in return.

Favourites take home hardware and Joaquin gets political

Pitt and Dern weren’t the only familiar faces on the stage during the show. Continuing their hot streaks were Renée Zellweger, who took home a BAFTA for Judy; the people behind 1917, who won a handful of awards; and Joaquin Phoenix, who took home the award for Joker. In a slight twist, Phoenix called out systemic racism and urged everyone—including himself—to do better, and you could practically see the audience squirming in their seats.More importantly, the evening capped the last of the big shows before the big cheese, the Oscars, which go down on February 9. Given these repeat wins, fans should have some expectations heading into the night. But hey, this is awards season — anything can happen.[video_embed id='1891993']Joaquin Phoenix calls out the lack of diversity during BAFTAs acceptance speech[/video_embed]
