Few classic tales have amassed the cult-like following and widespread recognition that Mamma Mia! has over the years. With an impossibly catchy soundtrack and a cast of adored characters, the popularity of the musical (both on stage and on screen) should come as no surprise. But now — to the delight of fans everywhere — it seems there could be a third film in the works. Amanda Seyfried, who played Sophie in the 2008 original and the 2018 sequel, recently sat down with Collider to speak about her upcoming film You Should Have Left, and during that chat, revealed the potential for another Mamma Mia! Seyfried noted that, in fact, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, was a sequel to the original film, but had prequel tendencies. "Well it's a better story”, she shared, “because they had something to grow on. Like the first story had to match the stage show. So it was like, they were kind of stuck. With the second story, it could have been anything." Adding, "Having Meryl’s character die kind of gave us so many good storylines [and flashbacks]." But more importantly — would she want to return for a third movie? According to Seyfried, it would be a "hell yes!" from her (and the rest of the cast). “Listen, every single person in that movie would say yes in a heartbeat because we want to hang out with each other”, Seyfried explained. “That’s what we talked about last time, like did we ever think that we’d end up here again on an Island in Croatia? So yeah, I wish there was a Mamma Mia 3.” [video_embed id='-1']RELATED: Lily James got such a high from dancing on Mamma Mia![/video_embed] However, she did express some concern in the music department, noting that they may not have enough song options. “I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again and I hope I’m wrong again.” Seyfried continues, “I don’t think there are enough ABBA songs to make a third movie. Because we’d have to use “Super Trooper” again and we’d have to use “Mamma Mia” again and have to use them in a different way.” But perhaps Seyfried has nothing to worry about, because Mamma Mia! producer, Judy Craymer, recently revealed in an interview with the Daily Mail that a third film is, indeed, in the works. In fact it was already in the planning phase before COVID-19 hit, and it will potentially feature new songs by ABBA. In the interview, Craymer shared, “I was meant to have been getting on with that, in my head, during these months. But then I got hit with COVID fog. I think one day there will be another film, because there’s meant to be a trilogy, you see. I know Universal would like me to do it." Would the third film stick to the same timeline as Here We Go Again? Will Lily James star as a younger version of Meryl Streep’s beloved character? Seems we'll have to wait to find out.
