A new family-friendly film about the supernatural is arriving just in time for Halloween. On October 2, Warner Bros. released the first trailer for their adaptation of Roald Dahl’s 1983 novel “The Witches,” featuring a cast that includes Stanley Tucci opposite Oscar winners Anne Hathaway and Octavia Spencer. It looks delightfully devilish, and should make for perfect Halloween viewing for both kids and full-grown scaredy cats. The film centers on a young boy who moves in with his grandmother (Spencer) in her home in rural Alabama after the death of his parents. Providing a sense of déjà vu, Chris Rock narrates the film as the older version of the young boy, giving viewers a throwback to Rock’s semi-autobiographical TV comedy
Everybody Hates Chris. The young boy, played by newcomer Jahzir Kadeen Bruno, goes on vacation with his grandmother to help lift his spirits and checks into an upscale seaside hotel, which is run by Tucci’s character. The boy and his grandmother aren’t the only guests and soon find themselves sharing the hotel with a coven of witches who are led by Hathaway, the Grand High Witch. Under Hathaway's tutelage, the witches hatch an evil plan to turn all children into mice in order to have them exterminated by the hotel. Thankfully, Spencer’s character is a retired witch hunter and along with her now-rodent grandson, the pair team up to defeat the witches.
The Witches marks a reunion for Hathaway and Tucci, who previously starred together in the 2006’s fan favourite
The Devil Wears Prada. Miranda Priestly would definitely approve of the very fashionable new film. Groundbreaking. Not only does
The Witches feature a dream team in front of the camera, the new film also includes an impressive line up behind the scenes. Dahl’s beloved book was turned into a screenplay by Oscar-winners Robert Zemeckis and Guillermo del Toro along with
Black-ish creator Kenya Barris. Zemeckis, whose directing credits include
Back To The Future, Death Becomes Her and
Forrest Gump, stepped behind the camera for the new adaptation. The
Polar Express director also produced
The Witches along with Oscar winner Alfonso Cuarón. That’s a lot of talent to pack into one movie.
The Witches will be coming soon to theatres, but a Canadian release date has not yet been confirmed.
The Witches was previously adapted for the screen in 1990 and starred Anjelica Huston as the Grand High Witch and Rowan Atkinson the hotel manager, Mr. Stringer. As with most of Dahl’s film adaptations, the author was not a fan and called the Nicolas Roeg-directed film “
utterly appalling.” Hopefully the new reimagining is one the late author would have enjoyed.[video_embed id='2047940']Before you go: Shawn Mendes released new video for ‘Wonder’[/video_embed]
