We’ll have to wait until Friday to see the first full length trailer for the upcoming Fast & Furious 9, but Universal Pictures is giving fans a small taste of what’s to come in the latest instalment of the beloved franchise. Spoiler, it’s still all about the family. The first teaser for Fast & Furious 9 dropped on Monday and fast-forwarded a few years after 2017’s The Fate of The Furious (not to be confused with 2019’s Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw, which starred Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham and Idris Elba…not confusing at all). The teaser opens with Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel) trading in his hot rod for a tractor and getting some mechanical assistance from his young son, who viewers are seeing for the first time in the teaser. The pair have made themselves at home on a farm with Toretto’s partner Letty (Michelle Rodriguez), who is not a mom we would want to mess with in the carpool lane. A far cry from the streets of Los Angeles, the family appears happy in their new settings, which of course means some serious business is about to go down to jeopardize it all.[video_embed id='-1']RELATED: Did Vin Diesel let slip that he’s in the ‘Avatar’ sequels?[/video_embed]“Things change now that I’m a father,” says Diesel in the teaser. “I can’t live my life a quarter mile at a time anymore.” True, but he’s still going to race cars, right? There are about 14 more movies to make and they’re going to be really boring if there aren’t any cars involved. That’s 93 percent of the films. The other 7 percent is Diesel saying, “I don’t have friends, I have family.”
The teaser has a running time of less than a minute but still manages to pack in enough emotion to make any gearhead break down in tears. While putting the boy to bed, Letty calls the youngster Little Brian, a nod to Dom's dearly departed pal Brian O’Conner. This moment is made even more meaningful because the character’s exit from the series became necessary after actor Paul Walker was tragically killed in a car accident in 2013. Letty presents Brian with the oversized cross that Diesel’s Toretto famously wore throughout all the earlier Fast and Furious films before gifting it to his girlfriend. It’s not a practical gift for a four-year-old, but the sentiment is appropriate.Director Justin Lin has returned for the upcoming Fast & Furious 9, which will reunite Diesel and Rodriguez with Charlize Theron as baddie Cipher, Jordana Brewster as Diesel’s sister Mia, crew members Nathalie Emmanuel as Ramsey, Tyrese Gibson as Roman, and Ludacris as Tej. Cardi B is also slated to appear in the film, as is Helen Mirren, who is likely very, very happy to be starring opposite Diesel.
The British actor has been vocal about her desire to be cast in a Fast and Furious film, almost as vocal as she has been over her love of Vin Diesel. In 2016, Mirren told Graham Norton about her hopes of being added to the franchise, saying “They’re incredible fun to do those movies. You don’t act,” said Mirren, adding “Things explode all around you. It’s unbelievable fun. That with cars? That would be my dream come true.” Mirren appeared in last year’s Hobbs and Shaw as Statham’s mother Magdalene Shaw, and is back once again to race cars and swoon over Dom.Fast & Furious 9 is set to open on May 22.[video_embed id='-1']Before you go: Dash cam captures empty vehicle driving on its own[/video_embed]
