It may be one of “the worst kept secrets in Hollywood” according to Lionsgate CEO John Feltheimer, but that won’t stop us from doing a happy dance now that it’s confirmed; 33 years after it rocked the movie-world,
Dirty Dancing is finally getting
a proper sequel. Not only is Jennifer Grey back to star after she won our hearts as the young Frances “Baby” Houseman in the original, she will also serve as executive producer because, obviously, “Nobody puts Baby in a corner!”The 1987 coming-of-age romantic film that launched both Grey and the late, great Patrick Swayze into mega-stardom, and had us all trying to do the cha-cha and the rumba, was a massive movie blockbuster. It grossed $218 million at the global box office, garnered both an Oscar and a Golden Globe for the original song, “(I’ve Had) The Time of my Life,” and both Swayze and Grey received Golden Globe nominations for their performances.[video_embed id='1996116']RELATED: Jennifer Grey working on a secret film that could be a 'Dirty Dancing' sequel[/video_embed]Since then, there was a short-lived
TV series, and a sort-of sequel
Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights, but this upcoming one is what Feltheimer is calling, “exactly the kind of romantic, nostalgic movie that the franchise’s fans have been waiting for and that have made it the biggest-selling library title in the Company’s history.”Patrick Swayze, who played the heartthrob Johnny Castle in the original, died in 2009 after a battle with pancreatic cancer.Grey’s inclusion in this sequel is a big deal because she previously turned down an unspecified role in ABC’s
TV movie remake back in 2017. Speaking with
The Hollywood Reporter, the actress, who is now 60, said at the time, “I was asked to do something on that show and I was flattered because I always want to be asked because it's nice to want to be included. But for me, it would be sacrosanct for me to do it because it didn't feel appropriate to me. […] I wouldn't say [what role was offered] but I will tell you, it wasn't Baby!”
Deadline is reporting that the much-anticipated sequel will be directed by Jonathan Levine and Gillian Bohrer, and the screenplay will be written by Mikki Daughtry and Tobias Iaconis.Only one question remains: will they be doing The Lift, or nah?[video_embed id='1824993']Before you go: These are the teen movies we can’t get enough of[/video_embed]
