Adam Driver skipped the ‘House of Gucci’ after party because he, too, just wanted the movie to be over

On a scale of Lady Gaga to Adam Driver, how done are you with 'House of Gucci'?

Adam Driver was more than ready to say goodbye to Maurizio Gucci after filming on House of Gucci wrapped. So much so that he didn’t even go to the movie’s wrap party.

The 38-year-old actor revealed as much to W magazine for its January issue, opening up about the gruelling process behind making the Italy-shot film, nailing the Gucci walk, and why he hasn’t been to a wrap party since he said goodbye to Girls in 2017.

“I do not live in the same world as Maurizio Gucci. The way he picks up things that are valuable and discards them, the way he is the most elegant man—those qualities were interesting to think about,” Driver told the publication. “After 14 hours a day of being a Gucci, I was ready for it to be over. In general, I leave jobs immediately. I haven’t been to a wrap party since Girls. I just want to get the character out of my system and go home.”

Maurizio Gucci was an Italian businessman and a former head of the Gucci fashion house. His wife, Patrizia Reggiani (played by Lady Gaga in the film), was convicted of orchestrating his 1995 assassination. To get into the character, Driver and co. wanted to nail the costume, but also the oh-so-important mannerisms.

“Finding those glasses was a long process. The costume was important,” he also told W. “And the walk—the Gucci walk. There were generations of Gucci in that walk. He is a man who goes from rejecting the world he knows, to reclaiming his sense of self, to falling in love with a world that is toxic. He is a victim of timing.”

When the movie’s first-look photos hit the internet, no one could stop talking about how unrecognizable the actors were in character. But then the first trailer dropped and it led to some instant debate, specifically about Lady Gaga’s accent. Afterwards, even Gaga revealed that living within that Gucci world and with that character had been hard.

“I brought the darkness with me home because her life was dark,” she told Variety. “I had a psychiatric nurse with me towards the end of filming. I sort of felt like I had to. I felt that it was safer for me.”

Given that, it’s probably safe to assume that neither actor would be interested in the proposed House of Gucci prequel that Jared Leto wants to make with Al Pacino, huh? What we do know thanks to the W interview is that Driver would work with director Ridley Scott again, at least. House of Gucci was the second film Driver joined Scott on, having also shot 2021’s The Last Duel with him.

“I f--king love him. He uses four cameras at a minimum, and it’s like theater-in-the-round,” Driver said. “He draws his own storyboards, and the productions move very fast. He doesn’t lose momentum over a meaningless detail.”

House of Gucci hit theatres late last year. So far, the film has made just over $127 million US at the worldwide box office. (It hits digital platforms beginning February 1.) The movie has also been nominated for three SAG awards: Gaga and Leto are up for Lead Actor and Supporting Actor, respectively, while the entire cast has been nominated for Cast in a Motion Picture.

As for Driver? Aside from making the BAFTA long list of leading actors for the upcoming 2022 awards, he’s already moving on to the next roles he’ll probably also want to quickly step away from when he’s done. His next two films, White Noise, based on Don DeLillo’s award-winning novel of the same name, and the sci-fi thriller 65 alongside Ariana Greenblatt and Chloe Coleman.
