Simu Liu may be a new fan favourite in the Marvel universe, but he’ll always be Garbage Boy to Awkwafina. The Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings co-stars previously worked together in 2020 on the comedy series Nora From Queens, which starred Awkwafina (Nora Lum) in the titular role.

Liu appeared in a series of flashbacks as the sexy love interest of (fictional) Nora’s sassy, now-elderly grandma — a character that was referred to as “Garbage Boy” because of his job taking out the trash at the family home. (If you’re not following, that’s okay — all that matters is that it was hilarious and Liu looked super hot.)

Talking to Etalk’s Lainey Lui earlier this week, Awkwafina laughingly confirmed that the nickname has stuck. “He’ll always be the beloved Garbage Boy!”

On a more serious note, Awkwafina was quick to praise Liu for his work on the new Marvel film.

“I think Simu did superbly in all of this,” she told Lui. “He’s incredibly easy to work with. He really brings something to this role that we haven’t seen before. He’s just a really talented guy.”

A key part of the film and a talented performer in her own right, Awkwafina said she was grateful for the opportunity to play another strong, family-oriented Asian character while portraying Katy in Shang-Chi.

“It means so much. And especially for this specific movie, too, I think it’s really important. It’s the first one of its kind and it’s an honour. The MCU is a really fun, really cool place to be. It feels great.”

Lum was also happy to be reunited with Michelle Yeoh, who she previously appeared with in the 2018 hit Crazy Rich Asians.

“Just to be in the presence of Michelle Yeoh is amazing. [During] Crazy Rich Asians, I met her briefly and was kind of intimidated, but I realized that she’s just an incredibly warm human being.” Lum explained. “She’s so amazing in everything she does. To reteam with her in this movie was really special.”

A sweet sentiment, but Garbage Boy still has our hearts.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings hits theatres Sept 3, 2021.
