A return to the dystopian world of the Matrix is one step closer to becoming a reality with the release of two new teaser clips and a full-length trailer. Accessing the clips forces fans to make the same choice Keanu Reeves’ Neo did in the original 1999 sci-fi masterpiece: the red pill or the blue pill. All that’s on the line is your entire future… and the future of humankind.

The blue pill allows those who take it to return to their regular lives living in the fiction of the Matrix. The red pill, of course, reveals the truth: that the Matrix is a lie and reality is a far less pretty place than the one composed of ones and zeroes.

At whatisthematrix.com, the curious are asked to choose between red and blue. Each choice leads to a different clip that from the muuuch anticipated The Matrix Resurrections.

Without giving away too much, the red pill option reveals the updated world that exists behind the facade of the Matrix, featuring franchise newcomer Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. It hints at the idea that a fight is brewing. On the contrary, the blue pill clip is an exercise in gaslighting — the conspiracy is all in your head.

The trailer is a little meatier:

The Matrix Resurrections sees the return of Reeves in his lead role as Neo as well as former cast members Carrie-Anne Moss, Jada Pinkett-Smith, Lambert Wilson, and Daniel Bernhardt as the formidable Agent Johnson. Newcomers include big names like Neil Patrick Harris, Priyanka Chopra, and Christina Ricci. Lana Wachowski, one half of the original directing team behind the previous Matrix movies, also returns to the director’s chair.

The fourth installment in the Matrix franchise arrives in theatres on December 22, 2021.
