20 years after The Wedding Planner (watch now on Crave) hit the cinemas in 2001 (and smashed the Guinness World Record for a number one movie having its own number one song, “My Love Don’t Cost A Thing”), stars Jennifer Lopez and Matthew McConaughey finally reunited — virtually of course — to reminisce about the beauty of their time together making that classic rom com, and to also discuss the art of the rom-com genre.

Naturally the two heartthrobs had to talk about the best part of that film: their smooch scenes. “It still feels like it was yesterday. Just yesterday we were in the middle of that field with the movie theatre,” JLo gushed. “Do you remember doing that scene where you were about to kiss me?"

“I remember you saying to me, I don't know if you remember this. You said, ‘Miss Lopez, I'm going to kiss you now.’ And I said, ‘Okay, let's do it. Let's hit it.’ I remember that clearly.”

Naturally, the two co-stars both burst out laughing at that memory. With JLo seated in front of red, white, and blue flowers, and Matthew seated in front of ye olde red, white, and blue flag, they laughed about the infamous meet-cute scene in the movie where JLo, who played Mary Fiore, gets her heel stuck in a sewer grate while a dumpster nearly plows her over, leaving Matthew, who played Dr. Steve “Eddie” Edison to push her out of the way at the last minute, saving her life

“One of my favorite lines in the whole thing,” Jennifer laughed about the moment, “One of the reasons why I love that script [is], ‘You smell like grilled cheese and plums!’ It was just that idea of her fading out and kind of like this Prince Charming just rescuing her and her saying, ‘You smell like grilled cheese and plums.’ It was just so real.”

Matthew, for his part, remembered mostly the work ethic and diligent attention to detail that Jennifer displayed on set, calling her a “quad-threat,” “deliberate,” “well prepared,” and our favourite compliment, “JLo’s baller.”

“A lot of people wouldn't have done [their own stunts],” he noted. “That was the day when I was like, ‘Oh, yeah, JLo breaks a sweat.’ When you're on set, you love to do the work.”

The two then went on to talk about how magical a time it was back when they making that film, because for a long period of time after, nobody was making rom-coms that way anymore (especially Matthew, who has previously said he purposefully gave up making them to do more meatier roles – a decision that landed him an Oscar).

“We had such a nice rapport and chemistry,” JLo remembered. “We were somewhat at the beginning of our careers at that time. It was exciting to be working on any movie. I still feel that way. It was a magical time. I’m such a romantic too that working on those types of movies have a real feel for me.”

“In a way, [The Wedding Planner] was the last of the rom-coms," Matthew added. "The rom-com doesn't get made anymore." They both expressed how audiences seemed to scoff at the genre in the oughts and 2010s because they wanted something “grittier” and “more real,” as JLo put it, but seeing as how 2020 was a really difficult year for people around the world due to the COVID-19 global pandemic, romantic-comedies are due for a comeback.

“I think the appetite of audiences, especially after the last year is, ‘Can you give me 90 minutes of escapism? Of pleasure?’” Matthew said.

Agreeing, Jennifer added, “I wanna know there's a happily ever after, I wanna know that. Even though we know we've lived through a tough year, miracles still happen, love prevails; things can go right, for sure.” She also mentioned that she’s "trying to keep them alive" by continuing the rom-com traditions in her upcoming movie Marry Me starring Maluma and Owen Wilson (out on May 14) and Shotgun Wedding

“We’re going to do something again, baby,” she told him before signing off. “I miss your energy. I hope to be around you soon

JLo and Matthew chatted for nearly 30 minutes and held our attention the entire time, so yeah, we think the two should reunite on screen again in the near future. Think of the records they’ll smash this time.
