There are seemingly few things in this world as expansive as the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Just when you think a franchise has come to an end, or a beloved character has performed his or her final, spandex-clad fight scene, we hear whispers of more. The end is (rarely) the end.

Marvel is, after all, in the business of bringing epic ideas to life – so the occasional on-screen resurrection of a superhero or two shouldn’t really come as any surprise. Fortunately for Chris Evans fans, rumours are circulating that Captain America is set to make a comeback.

Although the details aren’t yet clear (or confirmed), Deadline announced earlier today that Evans is slated to reprise his role as Captain America at some point (soon). Will it be a dedicated Captain America installment? Apparently not. Sources seem to think Evan’s will return to the MCU world within another Avengers adventure. A whole Avengers family reunion, of sorts?

Clearly, anything is possible in the Marvel multi-verse. If you aren’t convinced, look no further than the ever-evolving Spider-Man 3 cast list, as well as the upcoming Doctor Strange sequel which is set to feature iconic Marvel characters from various universes.

Of course, the potential return of Captain America is a bit of a surprise, in this case. Following 2019's Avengers: Endgame, Evans was rather vocal about that movie being the end of his character’s saga. He was, quite literally, hanging up the shield. And lest we forget the small detail of that shield being passed on to Anthony Mackie’s character, Falcon, at the end of the movie. But Deadline shares that, in recent months, both Marvel and Evans reportedly had a change of heart.

A man of the internet, Evans was quick to pick up on the online chatter surrounding his beloved character and, well, apparently this is news to him too.

Of course, this isn’t the first time an actor in the MCU has played coy to try and throw fans off the trail of exciting news prior to an official announcement. Fans will likely recall just a few months ago, when Tatiana Maslany said reports of her being cast as She-Hulk were just a rumour.... only for Marvel to confirm them months later.

Either way, fans are already busy forming their theories.

For now, it sounds like fans will have to wait and see if Chris Evans is playing the long game... or the endgame.
