Are you even a millennial if you didn’t grow up watching Spy Kids? If the mere mention of the franchise inspires a surge of childhood nostalgia well… same. But what would a modern remake look like?

As Hollywood continues on its mission to make everything old new again, Deadline reports that franchise creator Robert Rodriguez is set to reimagine the classic family-friendly films, writing and directing the.next installment in the franchise for Skydance Media. The movies famously centered around the top-secret, high-tech (and high-risk) activities of the multicultural Cortez family.

At the time of Spy Kids' original inception (the first film came out in 2001), Rodriguez was predominantly known for his action movies like From Dusk Till Dawn, but wanted to create something that his kids could enjoy. And so, the Cortez family was born – just like any other family, except, you know… Ingrid and Gregorio Cortez (played by Carla Gugino and Antonio Banderas) were world-class spies. After a mission-gone-wrong, their unsuspecting children, Carmen and Juni Cortez, stepped in to save their parents (and the world). The movie was a huge hit, and lead to three more installments between 2002 and 2011.

Naturally, fans (and even original Spy Kid Daryl Sabara) have some thoughts about the franchise's 'reimagining'.

Of course, the project is still in early stages, so casting decisions have yet to be made. But considering the number of well-known actors who made appearances in the original films (George Clooney, Steve Buscemi, Holland Taylor, Salma Hayek, and more) we can’t help but wonder who might make it into the revival.

Will Banderas or Gugino return in some capacity, or perhaps the OG Spy Kids, Alexa PenaVega and Daryl Sabara? PenaVega has, after all, been cast in a number of Rodriguez’s projects, and returned for the fourth installment of the Spy Kids franchise. Or will Rodriguez go back to the drawing board and come up with a brand new cast of fresh young faces? If so, who would we want to see? Noah Jupe? Madison Reyes? Morgan Lily?

Regardless of what this reimagining will look like, Rodriguez is clearly having fun.
