20 years ago today, the characters of Center Stage danced their way onto the stage and into our hearts, becoming a cult hit celebrated by viewers for years to come. And now? A follow-up series to the 2000 film is on the way.
For anyone who missed out on the original (or fell asleep early at every middle school sleepover ever), the movie follows a group of dancers with big dreams and big (pointe) shoes to fill, as they’re accepted into New York’s highly competitive 'American Ballet Academy,' which was loosely based on the real School of American Ballet. And while it wasn’t a notable hit at the box office, Center Stage seemingly won its audience over in one fell swoop — or, should we say, in one graceful leap, later that year, and is commonly praised as one of the few movies that actually got ballet right. The film was also followed by two sequels, 2008's Center Stage: Turn it Up and 2016's Center Stage: On Pointe.
Now, 20 years later, it looks like the classic dance movie is finally getting the modern TV revival we didn’t know we needed. The project has been put into development by Sony Pictures Television, and boasts a production team that includes Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, Laurence Mark (the producer from the original movie and both sequels), and Temple Hill Entertainment. Robinson recently made her directorial debut with Netflix’s Someone Great, and is also currently co-writing Marvel’s Thor: Love and Thunder screenplay with Taika Waititi.

Naturally, we have questions. Will any of the original cast be featured? Will Zoe Saldana put out another cigarette with a pointe shoe? Is there a world in which we finally get a Save The Last Dance/Center Stage crossover, and Julia Stiles shows up as a professor in the new series?? Either way, we’re beyond excited for this.
