Though we’re not officially celebrating Thanksgiving today like our neighbours down south, the American holiday did bring about a (literal) shady Ellie Goulding meme that we can all be thankful for. This year, the British popstar led the halftime performance for the annual Dallas Cowboys' Thanksgiving football game. While Goulding pumped up the Arlington AT&T stadium with a curation of her hit songs (including “Love Me Like You Do”), what really wowed the crowd was Goulding’s unconventional fashion choice.

Dressed in a colour-blocked black and white ensemble, and topped with a white cowboy hat featuring bedazzled tassels, we can only assume that Goulding was going for a 'diva cowgirl' look. Unfortunately, a lot of fans on Twitter couldn't quite get beyond the 'cowgirl' part, or the shadiness of it all—as in, a literal lamp shade. And in true Twitter fashion, they've decided to run with it.Case in point? Get you a pop star who can do both. Ellie Goulding is also now officially apart of the “Gonna tell my kids this was…” meme. She’s also being compared to a few other musical faves. Others are using her outfit choice to poke fun at the distinct cultural differences between the UK and the United States. And who doesn’t aspire to be compared to a SpongeBob meme? Interestingly enough, this new meme and Goulding’s outstanding performance almost didn’t happen. This year, the Dallas Cowboys' halftime show served as the official launch of Red Kettle Campaign, led by The Salvation Army with the purpose of serving those in need with shelter, food, holiday gifts, and social service. Earlier this week, Goulding took to Instagram to share the experience she had while visiting a Salvation Army location in New York. However, after fans criticized Goulding for supporting The Salvation Army and pointed out their complicated history with the LGBTQ community, the Grammy-nominated singer reconsidered performing."Upon researching this, I have reached out to The Salvation Army and said that I would have no choice but to pull out unless they very quickly make a solid, committed pledge or donation to the LGBTQ community," the artist commented in response to a fan.In the end, Goulding went through with the performance, and the show was a success—donations, viral meme and all.
