On what might have seemed like an average evening look for Taylor Swift this past week, her loyal fanbase have surmised might actually be a hint about her upcoming music.

First, let’s break down the look that got the internet buzzing. Last Friday, the singer was seen leaving the famed Electric Lady Studios in New York City after an evening session.

While working on her music, Swift was wearing a one-shoulder black top, a short pleated grey skort, and knee-high black leather boots. And of course, there was her signature red lip. Call it school-girl chic.

She was spotted leaving with model Cara Delevingne and Paramore’s Hayley Williams, which already had fans gossiping about them working on a possible collaboration. Other reports have said producer Jack Antonoff and his new wife and actress Margaret Qualley, Sabrina Carpenter, Sadie Sink, Gracie Abrams, and Rosé of BLACKPINK were also there for the session.

But here’s where the plot thickens: Swifties have begun to thoroughly analyze each and every outfit Swift has been spotted in recently, from day to night. Their vigorous work has led them to notice the singer has been wearing a pattern: black one day, blue the next day, repeat. This particular outfit seemed to lock it all in.

And they certainly seem to be onto something. At the MTV Video Music Awards earlier this week, Swift wore a black asymmetrical Versace dress with gold and diamond jewelry while in the audience and onstage. She also — rather conspicuously — ditched her red lip for a pink one. Later, after the show, she was spotted wearing a blue (!) upcycled denim mini-dress by EB Denim. This time, with a red lip.

So, what does it all mean? Well, the fans are predicting that, because she kicked off the pattern with black and a pink lip, that means she’ll be dropping her re-recording of her 2017 album Reputation first (and on whose cover she’s in black and white), followed by her re-recording of her 2014 album 1989 (which includes the infamous lyric “that red lip, classic, thing that you like…”).

As a reminder for those who are not superfans, Swift has been re-recording each of her albums as of November 2020 in order to effectively own all of her own music after talent manager Scooter Braun purchased the masters of her back catalog.

It’s certainly working to great effect; the singer has been in the headlines just about every day, and climbing the charts — as per usual.

At the VMAs, Swift was nominated for 11 awards, and took home nine, including Artist of the Year and Song of the Year.
