What do Deadpool, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and the third-oldest professional soccer team in the world have in common? A lot, apparently.

In a business move that arguably none of us (other than a Twitter user named Lois, apparently) saw coming, Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have made a bid to buy Welsh soccer club Wrexham AFC, currently playing in English football's fifth tier.

The news comes after Wrexham AFC announced last week that "two extremely well-known individuals" were looking to immediately invest £2m (around $2.5 million USD) into the Wrexham team. On Wednesday, September 23, Reynolds and McElhenney were named as the mysterious bidders; revealing a rather unexpected pairing to venture into the world of professional soccer.

Although nothing has been made official (yet), the Wrexham Supporters Trust confirmed that 97.5% of 1,254 members voted in favour of the actors’ proposed takeover during a meeting on Tuesday and, at a second Special General Meeting, Reynolds and McElhenney will have the opportunity to share their vision.

Reynolds is, of course, well known for his work on Hollywood blockbusters like Deadpool and The Hitman’s Bodyguard, in addition to his Aviation Gin brand (and all-around hilarious social media presence). McElhenney, on the other hand, is an actor, director, producer and screenwriter, who fans have come to love as the creator and star of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

Wrexham, the oldest football club in Wales, has been fan-owned since 2011. Perhaps, on the heels of Aviation Gin’s sale to Diageo for $610M, Reynolds has more entrepreneurial time on his hands? Or, perhaps, Reynolds (being Reynolds) was simply seeing through the perfect Twitter opportunity, which revealed itself 8 years ago:

Honestly, stranger things have happened.

MSN reports that McElhenney first came up with the idea, and got Reynolds on board. According to the source, “They see it as a journey, to make the club successful, and they want to document it on film." Still, we can't help but wonder, why now? And how long have Reynolds and McElhenney been friends? Was this bromance-soon-to-be-business-partnership flourishing right under our noses all along?

If you’re still grappling with question of, ‘Why Wrexham?’…well, McElhenney has the perfect answer:
